Ooops! Today (3/7) I inadvertantly over-wrote Wednesday's Cam Notes while doing Friday's pic of the day. Fortunately our other discussion moderator, Daryl Laitila, had backups of most of the messages (whew!). Thanks also to Becky the Pasty Girl for re-entering all these notes. Sorry if we lost any of your comments. It's OK now to scroll to the bottom of this page and add any new messages.

This isn't the first sunrise from Escanaba we've enjoyed on
the Pasty Cam. Back in December, before the snow came, the
icy harbor was Donn de Yampert's subject. That one also
appeared as a Wallpaper of the Week.

It's still extrememly cold for March here in the U.P. Looks
like Lake Superior may freeze over entirely. Anybody up for
a walk to Isle Royale?

Neat picture with the sun rise - I'm trying to figure out
how the sun got in front of the tree. Where are the branches
gone? Nothing like those early crisp mornings before the sun
warms things up for the day.

Good morning from Escanaba....glad we are still considered
Yoopers!! It hurt to leave Lake Linden and the wonderful
Copper Country but I have learned to love Escanaba, too!!
Lots of good gentle folks, beautiful, gentle, Lake Michigan
and a nice sandy beach.....a little closer to the Green Bay
Packers (GO PACK)..and lots of proud yoopers here
too....how about Marquette as the epicenter of the
U.P.?...but no one has a 4th of July like Lake Linden!!!!

Off Topic: Center Column page 1 of today's Wall Street
Journal features Yoopers. Headline reads: "An Outhouse on
Skis May Seem Strange, But These are Yoopers" the dateline
is Trenary, Mich. If I need to, I'll scan parts of it here.
Nice quote from Toivo Aho...

Re: Off Topic. Just finished the Wall Street article on
outhouse racing. Sounds like fun and another reason to make
the trek up in the winter. Although here in IN we are
having record breaking snow falls - 49 inches so far :)

I didn't remember Gay, as being large enough to have a
parade!

Hey! Does anyone know if that little Firehouse is still
there? I remember an old fashioned turn switch at the door,
that you would switch on if there was a fire, and a car
alarm siren that would go on to alert everyone!

The first thing I'm going to do when I get up there, is
crawl around in the Gay Smokestack! Those were the days!

Yooper in Indiana..you are right about the Gay (Mich)
parade. They have so much FUN...the last time I saw the
parade we were standing on the porch of the Gay Bar and
there were so many people on the porch the floor of the
porch broke through! What makes Lake Linden so special for
me are all my chums from school who gather each year..we
have a reunion each year. My dad's German band always
performed in the parade and represented the old Jos.Bosch
Brewry.( I guess the old Bosch-Ruppe home was destroyed by
fire yesterday)...till about 1965...anyone remember Studer's
German Band???? Dad had more fun than anyone. He LOVED
the 4th!!..in Lake Linden. class"50"

Beautiful picture Donn...Escanaba is such a beautiful
town...we've traveled through this area many times on our
way to Crystal Falls. I love the old homes along the water
front there in Escanaba.

Was wondering if there might be any pictures forth
coming of the Crystal Falls area? We love this town
situated high on a hill.

lighthouses.

The Gay firehall is right next to the community center,
between it and the smokestack. Right across from the school.
Indeed they pack in at least a thousand people (maybe double
that) there for the 4th.

I have to agree with Mary Lou, the 4th of July in Lake
Linden is the best, they sure know how to celebrate.
Had the opportunity to see the parade at Gay last year, it
sure was funny in some sections. A friend from Lake Linden
told me that one year the parade in Gay was so small it
stood still and the people walked around it. Think I'll go
see it again this year. That little town sure packs em in
there for the parade. Then you can GO STRAIGHT TO THE GAY
BAR.

Falls I can appreciate the pictures from up there. Keep it
up. Still have relatives up there who we visit from time to
time and cherish going back up there for the memories it
brings back.

As a Yooper wannabee, I really enjoy the conversations
about Copper Country and the rest of the U.P. I look up the
locations mentioned in my Michigan Atlas & Gazateer so I can
locate them and see them the next time that I come UP.

I've noticed some "my place is better than your place" and
"my place is the real U. P." in the conversations lately. I
have traveled from Ironwood to St. Ignace, and up to Copper
Harbor over the years and haven't been anyplace that I
didn't like. The conversations and my thoughts as I drove
through northern Wisconsin and the U.P to get to Houghton,
as well as my memories of the North Shore of Lake Superior
and other parts of northern Minnesota, got me to thinking
that what we have is bigger than Copper Country or even the
U.P. alone. The entire U.P., northern Wisconsin, and much of
northern Minnesota is extremely attractive for its forests,
streams, waterfalls, hills, cliffs, local lakes, the two big
lakes, beaches, the small towns and cities, the people, the
history, etc., etc. Each part of this three state area has
its own uniqueness as well as some similarity to the other
parts of the area. We can think of ourselves as very
fortunate to live in or have access to this large and
wonderful part of the world. It's not unlike the land of the
Sami that encompasses parts of northern Norway, Sweden,
Finland, & Russia.

I'm not suggesting that this website change its focus one
bit. (I'm sure that's not a risk) It's fantastic just as it
is. But let's think of ourselves as very fortunate to be
where we are, or where we are from, or where our ancestors
were from, or where we go, or where we want to go, and
remember that this whole big area is a pretty great place.

Jim, Twin Cities...you are 100% correct. I'm sure our
service personnel would think any where in the good ole
U.S.A. is better and prettier than traveling in hostile
countries around the world.

There's nothing wrong with dreaming about our favorite
places to be...those are special places to us, but quite
frankly, let's all take the time to pray for those young men
& women who are willing to fight (if need be)for us to have
the freedom to voice our opinion on where we feel the best
places are. I'm sure all of them would rather be right here
amongst us, then where they are today.

GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.!

Mary Lou, several yrs ago when we were home we went by the
old Bosch Brewery and the Bosch home. That was such a
beautiful old home.Lake Linden has lost a treasure. John Dee
went by there and took pictures and had them on his page
yesterday. He also mentioned and showed a picture of a house
that burned up by the old clay pits. My Mom lived in that
area as her Dad worked at the little brick Bosch Brewery
there on the corner. Could someone tell me about the clay
pits? I presume they were used to get clay to make bricks.
Was there a brick factory? Hope someone knows the answers.
My Mom worked at Lindell's which is another "gem".

Hei, Jim/Twin Cities: You sure got that right! Ever think
how lucky we are to be born around here and not in
Afganistan or Iraq or thereabouts? My Mimi and I are both

from Lapland.) We sure do enjoy HIS blessings UP here!!

By Brittney, Wisconsin on Saturday, June 28, 2003 - 08:16 pm:

Hi my name is Brittney. I have been in the parade in gay ever scence i was like 1 or 2. My grandparents are the ones that started it. One day they were bored so they took a few friends and their kids and got dressed up in some costumes and walked around gay. They now have been doing this for some 21 years. After the parade every year they have a party at their cottage in Gay.

By Angelita - Wisconsin on Saturday, June 28, 2003 - 08:42 pm:

I'm one of the "kids" who was in the original parade in Gay. I believe we had 7 original participants. Technically we started it in 1976. Everyone in the United States was suppose to blow their car horns simultaneously during a specific time. We just added a few extra features! We let it go for a few years then revived it with a vengence!! Our "rule" is you may watch the parade once, but after that you have to participate in it! Friends and family members are excluded from ever viewing it (unless it's on video later). They are required to participate. It's a great time that always holds pleasant memories. Please join us!!!
