Happy Valentines Day from Pasty Central. Meant to have the Cam on after midnight (this morning), but had to wrestle with Eino's old Suburban which wouldn't start. I told him he shoulda got a jeep. We brought the battery inside to warm up (us and the battery), and I got to meet Eino's sister Tina (short for Tyne), visiting from the state of Washington, here for Winter Carnival. Nice lady.

By Marvin, Florida and Bumbletown on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 10:10 am:

I want to wish a Happy Valentines Day to my new wife Kathleen. We found each other when she responded to a posting I made on pasty cam on 12/23/2001. We were both living in Florida and both had hopes going back home to the copper country someday. We bacame friends and fell in love when I helped her move back home to Bumbletown Hill. She made me a very happy man when we were married on Bumbletown Hill on 1/1/2003. She is now helping me to move out of Florida and up to our hill. By spring time we will be back home to our home on the hill. The pasty cam will always be in our hearts.

Toivo, I just bought a jeep. It's part of my plan to move back to the UP. I figure I'm going to need something I can put a plow on. Until then, I can take off the rag top and go 4-wheelin' in the swamps of Florida. Great fun! Am also planning on towing the jeep UP when Dad and I come UP this summer with the 2 labradors, 2 cats, and a rabbit. It make for a very interesting 1600 mile trip, but well worth it.

Congratulations, Marvin and Kathleen! What a terrific story! A good start to a Happy New Year for you!

By Toivo from Toivola on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 11:12 am:

Congratulations Marvin and Kathleen! Thanks for your picture I just found in our photo inbox. Pasty Cammies everywhere wish you the best in your move back to the U.P. You might want to consider a different mode of transportation, however (dogsled?). Maybe Pegg could give you a pull with her jeep!

Yes, congrats Kathleen and Marvin! I keep fishing for a story like yours. Maybe someday.

By Phyllis, Texas on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 11:30 am:

I think that is great that Marvin and Kathleen found each other on this sight. (which is a great sight) My husband and I were engaged at the Big Bay Lighthouse in 1989. We lived in the U.P. for a few years. It was and always will be a great place with lots of great memories. Hope to move back some day! We now live in Texas and it is not the same. It may only snow once a year here. When it does snow here I have to sit and watch it come down. I check this sight everyday along with other sights that have live camera shots of the great Lake Superior! (Miss the great lake!)

Marvin and Kathleen - Include my congratulations on finding each other via Pasty.com. It is a beautiful Valentine's Day story. I am glad Toivo put the picture of you two on today's postings so we know who you are. You make a beautiful couple.

By Northern Lights Lodge, Cadillac on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 01:15 pm:

Congratulations to Marvin and Kathleen! What a lovely Valentine's Day love story! Somehow, I gently hear music in the background... "I found my thrill on Bumbletown Hill" (instead of Blueberry Hill)

Hello to Britto in India; thanks for your help... my computer problems aren't quite sorted out but hopefully soon they will be. Leslie

By Mr. Wheatman, South end on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 01:21 pm:

Kudos on buying the Jeep, a finer vehicle does not exist, indeed. That picture basically expounds the splendor of life in the UP, broadcasted under the auspices of a fine lens camera. Bravo on the captured moment.

Man the expanded Bridge cam is awesome. I didn't realise until yesterday that you could click on it and expand the picture. Makes me almost feel like I am right there looking out Daryl's window. Kinda feel like a voyuer though, I can identify noticable vehicles like the transit bus on the bridge and can even see what's happening in the corner of the Ramada parking lot or a few crazies crossing the ice next to the bridge on snowmobiles. Makes me feel home but also homesick.

Take another look, I washed the window this afternoon at 4:30, It's a lot more clear now.. Daryl :)

By Carole on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 03:54 pm:

The Great Sand Bay, my favorite place. Grew up in that area years ago when my grandparents had a camp there. Makes for a super wallpaper!!!

Congrats to Marvin and Kathleen; glad that the Pasty Cam audience finally got to meet you two. Nice to put a face to names.

By Proud Yooper - MI on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 03:56 pm:

That is an awesome picture of the bridge. We will be able to see the bridge operator at the top tower later this Spring. Ha! I don't like to see the snowmobile tracks by the bridge. Duh! What are they thinking?

By mary Lou on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 04:17 pm:

Marvin and Kathleen..Congratlations!!! Thank you for sharing your happiness ( & picture) with us.....you just look like you belong together!!!!....."what the world needs now is love sweet love"....

By JohnK, AA, Mi. on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 04:29 pm:

Hey Toivo,

Take a look at this ice map:
http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/cwdata2/lct/glsea.gif
It looks like there is an ice bridge from the Keweenaw tip to Canada. When was the last time that happened? Anybody up for a stroll to Isle Royal?

By Candy on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 05:29 pm:

Thank you, Daryl!!

By pegg, fla on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 05:55 pm:

JohnK, Do you think that the ice would be thick enough to drive across? We could take my new "Intense Blue" jeep (for those that might be interested in what color it is). The heater works very well. It's been unusually cold here in Florida too. The summers are getting hotter and the winters are getting colder because of the pollution caused by the human infestation on this planet eating away the ozone layer. That's my theory anyway and definately not the way God planned it. Two summers ago when it was 100 degrees or better in the Keweenaw for several days convinced me. Thank goodness for Dad's van. We burned up a bunch of gas driving around with the A/C on trying to cool us and the animals off. I recall one night when the low was 95 at our house on the bay. The only other option was the water at 65 degrees. The summers in Fla are getting increasingly unbearable, very hot but with the usual intense humidity. You can't even go outside, as it's hard to even breathe, let alone try to do anything. That's one of the reasons I want to come back to the UP. The climate for one and also to throw snowballs at Alex and Fran. (with real snow). Refer to January 2, 2003 cyber snowball fight on the PastyCam.

By pegg,, fla on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 06:08 pm:

p.s. Mr Wheatman. Me thinks the picture was taken in Florida. I don't recall palmettos growing in the UP. Look to the left of Marvin's head. Happy Valentine's day everyone.

By Grandmas Pasties, MN on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 06:49 pm:

Daryl,
I just zipped over to the "new" bridge cam and agree with the others, it is great. I can see where I grew up. Can hardly wait until daytime when I can see better. What a difference color makes. Have a great day. ***Sandy***

The bridge cam is AWESOME........and what a great Valentine's Day story.............Love the site

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 08:35 pm:

I just noticed something else about the Bridge Cam... I mentioned yesterday that you can click on it and see almost a full screen version. But, I just discovered that it seems to shut off at 6:45 PM, thus preventing anyone from EVER seeing a black blurred screen overnight. That is awesome!

Sometimes I like to look at the bridge at night. I would come around and see the lights on the towers and couldn't make anything else out!

By pegg, fla on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 09:59 pm:

A & P, Summer generally starts on August 2 and ends on August 3. My summer house is right on the west side of Keweenaw Bay and gets north-eastered from the big pond some days. Big waves, like the ocean sometimes. Temps in the 60's are not uncommon on such days and you definately want to be out of the wind if you are in shorts, I do them with knee socks. Layer yourself, you will go through a ton a clothes in one day. Socks, sweat shirts, undershirts, overshirts, then eventually perhaps a bathing suit on the beach for an hour. One thing I learned about living around the big pond is that it makes it's own weather. If you don't like what's happening and think the day's a total loss, just wait about 15 minutes, it will change.

Anyone hear any further info on that Lighthouse that might be for sale to the public? Someone sent me info on that recently and I wanted to know its present status!

Thanks!

Pasty cam is obviously more successful for finding romance than the long running programme on British TV called "Blind Date" (Interesting fact!!) Congratulations Marvin and Kathleen.

Congratulations to Marvin & Kathleen--from

Tina - -

I see Eino finally got you to try the computer. Not bad for the first time. You can keep the duct tape. Since I left it there yesterday, consider it my valentine.

Toivo

By Proud Yooper - MI on Saturday, February 15, 2003 - 11:36 am:

Duct tape for a Valentine? Love it! Reminds me of the Redneck Valentine poem I read yesterday where the guy gives his wife a troll'n motor. Keep that humor Toivo.
