Here's a picture that might be of some interest to the old time UP'ers. This is picture of my older brother (now dead) and my two sisters. One is 94 and the other is 90. The picture was taken in Mohawk in 1915. They also had a wagon that they could hitch the dogs to in the snowless months. These look like they were big dogs but I never did find out what kind they were.

Am one of Pasty Cam's daily fans and enjoy the choices of pictures.

Happy Groundhog Day! Punxsutawney Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter (what a surprise). You can read more about the festivities out east at Groundhog.org

Do you have an old shoebox full of photos in your closet? Any from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan? Scan and send to photos@pasty.com, and share your old-fashioned glimpse of life in the U.P. here on Pasty Central.

Hi Ray! Great to see a picture of my Uncle Owen on Pasty Cam! Dean said to be sure and check out today's Pasty Cam to see his Dad's picture from long ago. Uncle Owen was always lots of fun and always ready for a laugh as was his wife, Myra. Thanks for getting this picture on, Ray.

Looks like that road past God's Acre was in good use even back then!

If we were still traveling around like this, life would still be simple, right? Progress...phfooey!

By Julie, MI on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 04:07 pm:

Looks like Bethany Lutheran Church hasn't changed too much over the decades.

By Jean, Devon, England on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 04:12 pm:

Are the dogs a sort of Mastiff? I checked out the groundhog.org site yesterday. I'm curious to know where they get the groundhog from that the chap is holding up. Is it someone's pet do you think?

By Alicia , Mi. on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 04:16 pm:

What a wonderful picture Ray! I see the Bethany Lutheran Church in the background. Can't see the old "Bucket of Blood" on the left.I spent many summer and winter days atop the old rockpile.

By M.H., MI on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 04:29 pm:

When was the old "Bucket of Blood" building built?
Was it there then?

By Ron Kentala, Michigan on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 06:53 pm:

I remember the old "Bucket of Blood". Had two bowling lanes if memory serves me right. I'm talking 64', 65' when we lived in Fulton. "Crabby Jack" used to let us kids bowl for 10 cents a game, set your own pins. Those were the good old days!!!!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 07:27 pm:

Is that not the beginning of the Gay Road? The one that connects Mohawk and Gay? That looks like my Grandma's church building! It MUST be, but can anyone confirm that?

HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY!!!
The little woodchuck did not see his shadow in these parts, finally something on a positive note..We took a little trip (about 220miles) over to the DeGray Lake area of Arkansas and had the celebration with son in laws family & friends, plus our old group that could make the trip. We always have a large bonfire at the gathering, and when it burns down, the Christmas trees from a few weeks ago are thrown on heep...and a large BBQ shoulder dinner (aka-"ground" hog), fireworks, and this year a solem prayer offered before the start for the crew of the space shuttle Columbia and their families.... Hope y'all had a great day
Pat & Glenda
PS..a note from P. Phil Groundhog..NO MAN LIKES TO BE SMOKED OUT OF HIS HOLE IN FEBRUARY!

By Charlie and Edie, at home in Eagle River, MI on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 08:23 pm:

Pat and Glenda,

I had to laugh about the old Christmas trees. Our son and his wife live in the house across the road from us here in Eagle River. This morning looking out our window my wife said, "Well, they finally tossed out the Christmas tree!", and there it was, standing stuck in the snow in their back yard.

A new rule of thumb: the Christmas tree definitely has to go by Groundhog Day :o)

By Mi. Dave on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 08:30 pm:

The name of the church is Betheny Lutheran on sixth st. between Mohawk and Fulton.

By John, MI on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 08:47 pm:

Alex. It is the beginning of the road going to Gay. That's Fulton in the background. The "Bucket of Blood" was Jimmy's Night Club before being called "The Bucket."

By Trammer 7 on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 09:08 pm:

Is "Crabby Jack" still in the U.P.? Used to see him in Slims cafe.

By DJB-MI. on Sunday, February 2, 2003 - 09:15 pm:

BUCKET OF BLOOD STORY; MY BROTHER-IN LAW STOPPED IN HERE ONE EVENING, WHERE A "DRINKER " CAME OVER BUGGIN' HIM.-- SAYING " I USED TO DATE YOUR WIFE" THE REPLY WAS "CAN'T BE,- SHE'S FROM GRAND RAPIDS" SO THE DRUNK PUT A KNIFE TO HIS THROAT ,WHICH WAS QUICKLY TWISTED & REMOVED FROM HIS HAND!

I am in awe of how this site talks about these places located about 2000 miles from me and at least a 24-30 hour drive, and makes me feel SO CLOSE TO HOME. Where else can I see the church my Grandmother went to, and a road I traveled on a million times.

I am SO grateful for this Website. I know I've said it over and over again, but if you knew how I long to be back in Mohawk, you would understand.

Thank you to EVERYONE who makes this site possible. You don't know what it does for me seven days a week.

Hey Charlie!
Just took my Christmas tree down today too. And yes, folks, it was a "real" tree! It was a shame to take it down, it was still growing and hadn't shed many needles, even with taking all the decorations and lights off, I only had a handfull of needles to clean up. Room looks a bit bare.......

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Monday, February 3, 2003 - 07:46 am:

Mary,

A number of people have mentioned this year that their Christmas trees just kept on growing. Jonathan and Katriina's tree had budding branches when they put it out. Looked like it was going to re-sprout roots!

What a darling picture! Thanks Ray...

To Trammer 7 - I talked to "Crabby Jack" when I was in the U.P. in the fall of 2001. 'Ran into him at the old "Hap and Lu's" outside of Copper City. He was looking real good and said that he was feeling well.

By Phil, Manton, MI on Monday, February 3, 2003 - 12:37 pm:

What a surprize, my wife and I got married in this church but it was a few years after this photo was taken. It was way back in 1977 and we used an automobile instead of a dog sled. The church does look quite nice now after it had a face lift.

To trammer 7: Crabby Jack is now a permanent resident of Lac LaBelle and he wouldn't have it any other way. I try to see him every year and he is doing better than ever. Still crabby though.

Dog on the right looks like an ole blue tick hound.

By Ron Kentala, Michigan on Monday, February 3, 2003 - 09:52 pm:

To Ned 20--Some friends of my parents used to own Hap and Lu's. Harriette and Bill. As a matter of fact, my wife and I just had Harriette's sister and husband up to our cottage at Lake Isabella last weekend. Marge and Larry Korby. Wouldn't happen to know any of these people , would ya?

By Greta, Ca on Monday, February 3, 2003 - 10:38 pm:

Boy, are you guys lucky! To have a Christmas tree so long and it be sprouting buds?!! Down here, they drop needles as you carry them into the house practically. If I lived up there, I'd keep the tree in the living room all year if it kept living. (It would seem appropos up there.)

By Bonehead on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 09:23 am:

Blue Tick? Biggest Blue Tick I ever saw. Must have crossed with an ox!

To DJB, I am sitting here green with envy! I am from Allouez, I have tramped around on skiis and snowmobile and now 4 wheelers. I sure miss that place and all the beauty there is there. Thank you all so much for posting and I also grew up around Harriet and Bills place! Great pasties, great times. Thanks again.

A "well-bred" & experienced friend in dog Rescue is pretty certain they are Mastiffs, & I concur.
