Last week the Pasty Cam served up a stellar performance by Samantha Masters during the Heikinpäivä festival (pronounced Heikinpäivä), and today we give equal time to the real men of the frozen north. Davey Holmbo was weak and frail before he took the plunge, but he emerged rejuvinated, revitalized, and ready for a good hot sauna. Our thanks to Pasty.NET member LaNaeh Holmbo for today's glimpse of life in the U.P.

A definite contender when the Pasty Cam Calendar publishes a Swimsuit Edition.

Nutso' absolutely crazy!! ;)

By Botla on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 08:22 am:

On the last picture it looks like Tampa Bay scored yet another touchdown.

By Karen P, MN on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 08:23 am:

Love the 2nd picture! Not only is the timing perfect, but look close, Davey is already screaming! I would be too. I like the forethought of having a wood ladder ready.

By Jen GR MI on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 08:25 am:

How many participants now have colds this week?

By Suomi wannabe on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 08:47 am:

Thanks, Charlie, for the assistance with the pronunciation of Heikinpäivä. I've always wondered how to say that! ;-)

By Jennifer, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 09:03 am:

I was waiting to see these photos published somewhere--my dearest mother (Sandy Lewin) was the photographer.

By LaNaeh Holmbo on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 09:11 am:

chuckling ....
Thankful the old man gets rejuvenated and just in time too cause I have some heavy snow shoveling for him to do...
Ya you betcha!

And Sandy didnt take all those pictures.....

Brain freeze makes people do that.

By Virgil Ashford Sunny Arizona on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 10:31 am:

second photo looks like he is walking on water yelling cold, cold, cold. Dad

Heikinpäivä festival, (pronounced Heikinpäivä)

Charlie is a comedian! LOL ROFL.

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 11:40 am:

I also loved the help with the Finn pronunciation!

Heikinpäivä festival, (pronounced Heikinpäivä.

Although my parents spoke Finn, sadly we never learned. They used it mostly to talk to each other so we didn't know what they were saying.

By Dave Mi on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 12:04 pm:

In the first photo it looks like he might be diving to look for his car that went through the ice and the last photo he found it.

By Lowell Mo. on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 12:57 pm:

Alice CA The same thing happened to me except my parents spoke French and they never taught us. Kinda threw a crimp in it when my older sister took French in High School.

By Jean, Devon, England on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 01:04 pm:

It looks so cold I'm surprised the water doesn't freeze over while he's preparing to dive!!! All this polar bear diving is really fascinating to me - I can't imagine how someone thought it up in the first place. We haven't got the extreme weather conditions over here, but I'm pretty certain there'd be "polar bears" diving here as well given the chance.

By Phil, Manton, MI on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 01:21 pm:

Well isn't that cool, certainly does look refreshing. I think it helps preserve the brain a little, Davey looks much more alert now. Just think, Greta could do this at her place in Copper Harbor.

By BCT,Mi on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 01:39 pm:

Slows your brain down so you don't think your getting any older. Py da vay, how you get dose dots ofer da "a's"??

Condolences to LaNeah.
We've known for quite awhile that he was a little "off", but now we know for sure!

....or maybe WE'RE totally off - maybe he's really a BRAVE man of the north!! At least on that day, he was really coooooool.

This should be a market for hair growth. You can clearly see more hair in the last photo than in the first. Is this the fountain of youth?

By Jana the Troll on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 07:38 pm:

How big is the UP exactly? I would like to drive it this summer and would like to know?
Thanks...

When is Groundhog Day?

By
Darrell Oinas on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 07:47 pm:

Well that's one way to cool off after a steam bath, but it's not somthing that I would suggest.
Well all, I tried for a meter reader job in houghton but had no replies. I am bound and determinded to return to my homeland. I dont ask for much, just a job with health benefits and a retirement plan and we are not talking big dollar's here, anything computer drafting related or computer related or anything around I can get my hands on.

By ol, mi on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 08:06 pm:

Jana, do you want to drive straight across or venture off to each side road. Map out US2 across the entire U.P. That's the straightest way. But you'd really miss out on the good stuff.
Mackinac Bridge to Houghton is 5 1/2 hours. Houghton to Ironwood is 2 hours,that's the east to west. I don't know about the north to south, maybe someone else can answer that. Lived here all my life and there's many places I've yet to go.

By ol, mi on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 08:38 pm:

Whats a WOW?

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 09:55 pm:

A "WOW" is something that when you look at one of the pictures here, you say "WOW!" (It also translates into Wallpaper Of the Week). (Snicker).

So the next time you come here and say "WOW!" Look for it in the "WOW" area, because you're probably not alone!

By miriam UP on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 09:55 pm:

Having just made the fast trip down from Bessemer to the Royal Oak area last week--we always figure 6 hours from Bessemer to the Bridge and then another 4 1/2 to 5 hours to Royal Oak (which is close to Detroit) We have a few stops we must make for the call of nature and to eat of course. Depends on the weather and which way you go--US2 or M28. But you will want to take the time to stop and enjoy the UP with all the Falls and other things to see. Porkies, Copper Country and much much more

By Ken from da UP on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 12:57 am:

Finnish characters for the computer?
ä = alt 132
å = alt 134
ö = alt 148
Ä = alt 142
Å = alt 143
Ö = alt 153
Hold the 'alt' key down and punch in the 3 number keys. Maybe there are other ways, too. I dunno. Minun äiti didn't teach us the Finn either. (my mother) When us kids would show up, everyone switched to Finn in mid-sentence. :o( Wish they wouldn't have done that. Oh, well....

By Mike Mehrman, MI. on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 08:44 am:

In the da fort picture, why isn't the host standing next to da ladder wit a warm towel???

By Alex Tiensivu, Ö on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 09:47 am:

Ö Looks like a happy face with the eye's popping out!

He probably had a warm towel, but it took one look at the situation and froze up! He should have had a sauna sitting right there for the guy to run in! Man, I'm freezing just looking at those pix!

When we move up there, none of y'all are going to make me do this, are you? LOL.

By T-Buck, Yoopee on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 10:37 am:

Does anyone know what the conditions are like at Mount Bohemia? Last year there was so much snow I wrecked my truck on the way up there, and my body while I was there. I am hoping for a repeat without wrecking my truck.

By Frank C, NE Illinois on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 11:18 am:

T-Buck, ski conditions ar the various spots in Michigan can be found here. Don't know about their accuracy, but WeatherUndergound.com uses them for their ski reports. Mt. Bohemia is currently showing no report for 1/28.

Their own website shows conditions here.

By Jim, Twin Cities on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 11:24 am:

If you are using Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer, another way to get the Finnish (or Swedish, etc.) characters is to go to the Control Panel, click on "Keyboard", click on the "Input Locales" tab, click on "Add", and then use the drop down menus to select "Finnish" for both "Input locale" and "Keyboard layout/IME". Now click "OK" on this menu and "Apply" and "OK" on the main "Keyboard Properties" menu. This sets up Finnish as one of the keyboard layouts. To use the Finnish characters, click on the "EN" on the toolbar. This will bring up a small menu of the keyboard layouts that have been installed. Click on "FI" and you have a Finnish keyboard. You will have to experiment to find out where the Finnish characters are. The language specific characters are usually on special character keys on the right of the keyboard.

I know that this sounds like a lot but once it is setup, your Finnish characters are just two mouse clicks away.

Tack så mycket.

This is absolutely the funnest, funniest, most interesting and educational web site I have ever visited. Not to mention the one with the best pictures and links! Thanks to you all.

By fred from nrw on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 04:54 pm:

Groundhog day? Well, Pat and Glenda, wait till next Sunday. And then see if you can get a light tan bedded on snow - after a refreshing dip-dive - oh did I say refreshing grrrrr.
Well, you try.
But folks I envy you for the snow and the chilly fresh wintry air.

By Ken Lower echelon Mich on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 05:33 pm:

Samantha was a hard act to follow. You yuppers are one great bunch.

Holy Wha Man.

By Another skier---- on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 09:41 pm:

T-Buck. Did you also wreck your skis at Bohemia? From what I hear, one should take their oldest, rattiest pair of sticks when skiing there cuz the rocks are going to get them. The skiing will never be much there with out snow making.

By AJ -MI on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 11:15 pm:

If I remember correctly, the a with the two dots is pronounced as the a in bat. The pronunciations I saw above didn't make that distinction.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 10:30 pm:

AJ-MI:

The way I learned it:
a = a as in arm
ä = a as in hand

Hope you yooper folks realize that this Davey guy is the art and technical director of the Calumet Theater. Maybe he’s been spending a little too much time at Shute’s?
