A Sunday "Soo-box" memory from R.C. Wetton...

This morning finds us 70 years later at the other end of the big Lake, with sub-zero temperatures and sunny skies. We're heading back from Duluth, where the MTU Husky Women swept a double header from Saint Scholastica. A check of the Bridge Cam in Houghton suggests we might run into some snow back in the Copper Country.

The locks at Sault Saint Marie have some good webcam coverage, too.

A Soo Box memory... That is a good one!

One thing about Lake Superior that draws
me is the history. It's just rich with it.
Interesting history that holds one's attention
for a lifetime.

Thanks for providing a look at the frigid past! If you love the Great Lakes and the big boats, visit boatnerd.com. Someone posted there about this photo!

Took photos of several of the moored boats in Duluth/Superior today. They have been here since 12th? and still have ice on their sides. They sure do park the Anderson close to its partner there!

Wasn't that long ago when I sailed the Lakes (ha ha) dumping ashes and blowing flues in the fire hold. Black smoke and soot! This pic sure brings back the memories, Bob. There were many more boats on the Lakes them days. Nowadays they aren't much more than huge barges with all the accomodations on the after end. Spose it won't be long and they'll be automated with computers and GPS navigation and won't even have a crew aboard. The first freighter I sailed on carried 12,000 or 13,000 tons. The last one carried 26,000 tons and now they carry 60 or 70,000 tons. Hei, Phil/Manton, I still haven't been to boatnerd to see the Ryerson. Maybe tonight.

To Ken,
Need to check the boat nerd site out, they have everything and anything on the Great Lakers. May even find the Ryerson in more than one place on this site. I still may find a way to get over to Sturgeon Bay Wis. for a tour. Trouble is I'm always in such a hurry to get to Keewenaw I don't stop for things that might run into time. I may have to change my route a bit.

I love going to the Soo and checking out the boats. I'm a full blown "boat nerd " I guess. Now with the locks video cam I can have almost as much fun at home when I can't drive the 330 miles to get there.

shm.
