Again this morning our bedroom was glowing with liquid gold streaming from the setting Keweenaw Moon. I rummaged through the myriads of megabytes we've received over the years from Dan Urbanski, and this scene closely resembles what I saw above the dunes as the day began.

Heikinpäivä 2003 begins today in Hancock, reminding us that we're halfway through a mild winter.

As always, Dan captures the absolute beauty of our world.

I was traveling to the Meadwestvaco Escanaba mill at 0630 hours and noticed the moon with wispy clouds moving horizontally across its face and thought "what a picture." Thanks for the photographic capture. What camera and lens did you use?

Isn't this the same picture (mirror imaged) as January 10, 2001? Is this an encore performance, or are you trying to play an April Fool's joke on us a bit early? :)

Chris is right. I flipped the image horizontally using my computer. And they completely matched. This is the mirror image of the picture on Jan 10.

This is a absolutely beautiful shot. Have never seen one like quite like it before.Calender Material!! We are getting snow in North Ga. today.It has been coming down pretty good since noon.The ground isn't covered yet and the roads are bare. All schools etc. are closed.We are hoping for snow all day today and tomorrow as extremely cold air is supposed to move in and would keep it on the ground for awhile.

Thanks, Mary, for the insight about the 'encore'. I must add, that Dan's shot looked exactly like the scene this morning in Eagle River, when I mirrored his original (taken somewhere near Ontonagon a couple of years ago). I should have known I couldn't slip one by our loyal Cammies who know the Archives well.

To make up for it, I'll try to post a second shot later today, something more recent from Dan. He sent me some dramatic ice closeups last week, which are floating around somewhere here at Pasty Central.

If only Toivo would tell me how to do it, I might post some here. They are good! Oh how I miss the beauty of the UP and the snow.

Heikinpavia is fine, but the true mid-winter celebration is on the cross-quarter day of Candlemas, better known as GROUNDHOG DAY, our most noble holiday. However the season may be acting up, you inter the downhill side (slide).
We received our pasty order today, a fine supper for our coldest week so far. We first went on line in Feb. of 1999, and made our first pasty order in March of that year. This site has grown unbelievably these past four years. Usually silent, we have used this portal over time to make connections & acquaintances throughout the UP, sometimes the trails get lost when we try to reverse the journeys.
Also took advantage of the "piggybacks," fudge pasties, Calumet book, Pasty Cam calendar..and a suggestion.
Saffron Bread! A most unique and delicious UP treat. Toni's Country Kitchen in Laurium used to bake loaves twice a day for regular customers! They sold it cheaper than you could bake it yourself!....could Pasty Cam connect somehow to this??..a sprinkling of raisins in the loaf??

Poor Alex! I was sure you would get some snow. Isn't that disappointing.We got about 1 1/2" and it coated all the trees etc so pretty. A Great Day.

I now live in Tallahassee, but grew up in Marquette, and then later on in the Copper Country. This photograph is one that I took from the front door of my family's cottage on Portage Lake. The icicles in the pictures are the ones that hang down from the side of the house. It was taken in the winter of 98, and if you remember that was a pretty cold and snowy winter.

I love the photographs that I always see on the Pasty Cam. I think it is a very neat service that is provided to those wanting to experience the beauty that area has to offer. Keep up the good work!

What a great photo! I was out with our dog tonight, and noticed the moon here and was wishing I would have taken a photo. There were some light clouds, but there was a huge circle opening where you could see the moon. People miss beautiful sights if they don't look up.

thanks for the gorgeous pictures. my uncle is Dan Dalquist, my mom is his sister, Marthe. We've often taken trips back to the Copper Country, and i enjoy them more each time. havent been there for over a year, and it's great looking at the pictures to bring back fond memories.

I've recently been moved to a job in Baraga. I drive from Houghton County each day. I just told someone that I pray several times a day on that ride, and twice for sure is thanking God for putting me in the most glorious area anywhere. I don't care if it's storming or not...that ride along Lake Superior is breathtaking each time. God I love this place!

We usually feature 4 sizes on the Wallpaper of the Week. I would think with a 21" monitor, you could use the highest resolution (1600 x 1200). Instructions are included on the WOW page.

Your resolution doesn't really depend on your monitor size but what you have the resolution set at. No matter what resolution you use on your computer, if you have the time for the download, it's worth it to download the largest resolution file.

Great pics. I remember as a kid walking home from the skating rink in the winter and seeing the Northern Lights. They are awesome. There is beauty everywhere up there.
We had 8 inches of snow in Nashville yesterday. I enjoyed every minute of it.

On Friday, January 17th, I was driving to work along Hwy 41 in Wisconsin. In the northeastern - northern sky, I saw the moon setting on the horizon. Barren, rolling farm hills were in the foreground. The colors of the moon were exactly the same as the picture above. Opposite the moon on the other horizon, dawn was breaking.

At that moment, I wondered what it would like up north. Would it be setting over Lake Superior?

My question has been answered! Until Friday, I have never seen a moon set before. Stunning! Thanks for the beautiful picture from Eagle River, MI! (Note: I have seen many a sunset in Eagle River, MI)
