Even with the arctic blast of the past couple days, our snowfall this year is way behind normal. Donn de Yampert took a stroll on the beach up at Portage Canal's North Entry, and came back with these dramatic shots... more sand than snow.

It's been another interesting week here at Pasty Central. Often on Saturday morning I catch up on the notes which have been posted by U.P. residents and visitors. We really appreciate all of the historical, humorous, and memorable comments which folks add to these pages.

Hi Charlie, Looks like the weathermen let us all down again statewide. This latest Artic Clipper was going to bring us cooler temps and lots of snow, I was actually hoping for at least 6 to 8 inches here in Oakland County. I love when it snows.

The ole' famous "breakies". Been here many a time during the few hot summer days we'd get when I was growing up in the Copper Country. What would a trip to McClains be without a stroll out to the end of the break water (over the rocks) be?

WTMJ in Milwaukee was having a lot of fun last night announcing that Mt Bohemia was closed due to a lack of snow. true? They say that any publicity is good publicity. Maybe this year they need snowmaking capability.

Here's a hot one for ya; The blue spruce we brought in for Christmas sprouted new buds & is still growing! this has never happened b4 , in fact they would dry up terrible.I wonder if it would catch & grow outside again. At any rate, I am amazed.

Used to swim at the breakwaters. A few years ago on a visit I drove down to the canal drive area looking for the sandy parking area in the pine trees where you'd park and walk to the rocks. Couldn't find the right drive, or so I thought. Apparently the access to the breakwater is now inside the State Park boundary?

Hey DJB give it a try, I have used a twig or branch and started a tree. It's now 7 ft tall blue spruce. Nice pic of the Light house. Thanks

Two items. #1 Yes the access to the breakwater is now from within the park proper. #2 We too had an xmas tree that kept growing when it was in the stand in the house. It was a regular spruce and it budded out. This is the second tree (another spruce) we have had do this. Doggon things just don't want to give up.

I am 10 years old and we visit Hancock every summer and we always go to the Breakers. Its lots of fun jumping off the break wall and skipping rocks! My mom, Teri Salani,said that she and her friends jumped off of the lighthouse all of the time. I LOVE the U.P! Its a great place to be!!!!

Our tree grows every year. We usually cut down a balsam, from our own farm, put it up right after cutting it and keep it well watered. I took this picture of our tree today. Hate to take it down, feels kinda like we'd be killing it! One year we even had small pine cones growing.

Let's not take Christ out of Christmas by calling it xmas. 'K? HE is the best friend we've ever had!

I hear the lake has been a little rough the past few days. Rumor has is many ships are at anchor in Bete Grise Bay. It usually has to be pretty bad for them to take anchor, one time last summer they had to take anchor, and one came through the portage canal. Any of have pics of the lake from this storm???

This is a wonderful site. It was introduced to me by a lady from Ontonagon (now deceased.)
My husband (now deceased) and I loved the UP. We managed to visit every county in the UP and in our travels, saw many gorgeous sites and met a lot of wonderful people. This site brings back many happy memories. Thank you for all the beautiful pictures and this site.
