I've been enjoying the Pasty Cam for a couple of years now. Here are a couple of pictures from my recent trip. I was surprised to see the number of snowmobilers around at Christmas time this year, given the poor showing of snow, but if you consider that we didn't see ANY snow on the way up from Chicago until we hit Crystal Falls, I guess it makes sense that anyone seeking snow this winter would head for the Copper Country.

The other picture is of my sister's cabin next door to my place at Rice Lake. Looks pretty in the snow.

What has happened to the Bridge cam? It has not been working for several days.

Here is a somewhat unrelated observation. Many of our ancestors came from Cornwall England, hence the pasties. Cornwall is located between 50 and 51 degrees north latitude as compared to the UP which is between 46 and 47.5 degrees north. Because of the tempering effects of the Atlantic Ocean, Cornwall is generally warmer in the winter than the UP. For the last few days, Cornwall has had more snow on the ground than we have in St. Paul, Mpls (45 deg n)! Here is a website to see. Hello Steve, we must be neighbors! Our place on Rice Lake is a few north of yours. But we only have to travel from Oshkosh to get to it. Nothing like the love of the U.P. to bring people together!

Seeing a picture of the bridge took me back to a story I remember about the old swing bridge. One hot summer day, when it was opened, it had expanded enough from the heat of the day so that it would not close properly. The fire departments had to come down and spray water on it, to cool it off, so that it would close up.

Speaking of the old swing bridge, I found this back in the Pasty Cam archives. It was just a short time before they opened the lift bridge and dismantled the swing bridge.

I have a photo of a bridge that is destroyed, probably by a large boat....there is a gathering of men at the base of the bridge looking at the destruction. It is dated 1905. It is labeled Hancock bridge and it sure looks like Houghton in the background. It is a professional photo and the photographer is C.E.Day...Can anyone fill in the blanks as to what happened..thanks.

Thank you P. Smit...I read that at 4:30pm on April 15, 1905 the steamer "Northern Wave" struck the swing span. The steamer was almost stopped but the span toppled into the Portage. The ship was to collect a shipment of copper from the Quincy smelter. Ferries were called once again to carry goods and citizens across the portage. Thank you!! Mary Lou Curtin

Who's the guy with the pontoon boat and the stereo cranked up?? I love that guy, cruising the lake with country tunes turned up. He is out on Rice Lake most nights.
