I've been enjoying the Pasty Cam for a couple of years now. Here are a couple of pictures from my recent trip. I was surprised to see the number of snowmobilers around at Christmas time this year, given the poor showing of snow, but if you consider that we didn't see ANY snow on the way up from Chicago until we hit Crystal Falls, I guess it makes sense that anyone seeking snow this winter would head for the Copper Country.

The other picture is of my sister's cabin next door to my place at Rice Lake. Looks pretty in the snow.

What has happened to the Bridge cam? It has not been working for several days.

By Karen P, MN on Friday, January 10, 2003 - 10:59 am:

Here is a somewhat unrelated observation. Many of our ancestors came from Cornwall England, hence the pasties. Cornwall is located between 50 and 51 degrees north latitude as compared to the UP which is between 46 and 47.5 degrees north. Because of the tempering effects of the Atlantic Ocean, Cornwall is generally warmer in the winter than the UP. For the last few days, Cornwall has had more snow on the ground than we have in St. Paul, Mpls (45 deg n)! Here is a website to see. Please notice that there are palm trees growing in the Penzance area to attest to it's normally subtropical climate. www.cornwallcam.co.uk

I'm sorry I didn't type the address for the Cornwall website so that it was a direct link. Try this http://www.cornwallcam.co.uk

The bridge cam seems to be working now!

By Angie, AZ on Friday, January 10, 2003 - 12:17 pm:

Wow! I knew there was a reason(other than looking for relatives) that I wanted to visit England....it looks beautiful!
Great pictures today, I love all the character that everyone puts into their pictures...makes me feel a little closer to home every morning!
Thanks for such a great site!

Hello Steve, we must be neighbors! Our place on Rice Lake is a few north of yours. But we only have to travel from Oshkosh to get to it. Nothing like the love of the U.P. to bring people together!

Hello Steve and Allison from one of your north end Rice Lake neighbors

Thanks for the Cornwall link. Great pictures. Makes you want to visit!

By Grandma's Pasties, MN on Friday, January 10, 2003 - 02:42 pm:

Karen,
I really enjoyed the Cornish shots. Thanks for the link. Winter has really come to Minnesota with a vengance. Didn't think we'd get by this easy forever. Have a good day from the Minneapolis side of the river. ***Sandy***

By pegg, fla on Friday, January 10, 2003 - 03:07 pm:

Thanks Karen P for the URL.
From there I might be able to dig some more and find out who my 4 great grandfather was. 3 great, Richard M. Edwards, emigrated from Cornwall in 1849 to the UP, with wife Jane Pryor. He was a mining captain. Neat!

THANKS FOR FIXING THE BRIDGECAM. I HAVE BEEN WONDERING MYSELF WHY IT WAS STUCK ON THE SAME DAY AND TIME.

YOOPERS, PUT ON YOUR THINKING CAPS!! It's always great to see the U.P. pictures & read the comments. Here's another fun thing we can do here on this cooler U.P. day..... Here's some old sayings: You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
A penny saved is a penny earned.
A stitch in time saves nine.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained... etc.
OK, who can think of some more??

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder"

"A stitch in time..."

"Don't dance if you can't pay the fiddler" (a Mrs. T. favorite on bad Saturday mornings-bless her).

"If it aint broke, don't fix it."

By Dam Guy, Parasite Creek, Negaunee on Friday, January 10, 2003 - 11:11 pm:

"Absence makes the heart grow Fonda, Jane." (This was big during the Vietnam War.) Also, "As the dog returns to its vomit, so doth the fool repeat his folly." (From the book of Proverbs.) And as me ol' grandmama used to say, "You'll get better before you get married." Lithuanian grandmothers said a lot of pithy stuff like that...

Hello Gary too! Are you all the way to the north , along the Rice Lake road, or down on Paradise? If either of you see some folks with a little White Westie on the dock, stop and say "HI"!

By Gus in Chicago on Friday, January 10, 2003 - 11:43 pm:

Seeing a picture of the bridge took me back to a story I remember about the old swing bridge. One hot summer day, when it was opened, it had expanded enough from the heat of the day so that it would not close properly. The fire departments had to come down and spray water on it, to cool it off, so that it would close up.

nothing ventured, nothing gained. many hands make light work. easier than falling off a log. smarter than a whip. cute as a buttercup. sweet as pie. dumber than a brick. another day another dollar. penny wise and pound foolish. memory like an elephant. sharper than a tack. best to let sleeping dogs lie. homely as a fence post. straight as an arrow. tighter than a mouse's ear. beauty is only skin deep. pretty as a picture. built like a brick out house. tough as nails. just a few i have heard voiced in the past.

Speaking of the old swing bridge, I found this back in the Pasty Cam archives. It was just a short time before they opened the lift bridge and dismantled the swing bridge.

I have a photo of a bridge that is destroyed, probably by a large boat....there is a gathering of men at the base of the bridge looking at the destruction. It is dated 1905. It is labeled Hancock bridge and it sure looks like Houghton in the background. It is a professional photo and the photographer is C.E.Day...Can anyone fill in the blanks as to what happened..thanks.

By PSmith SC on Saturday, January 11, 2003 - 09:51 am:

Mary Lou-In response to your query on the bridge accident of 1905-go to www.copperrange.org/spans or the sept 01, 2001 Pasty cam. P Smit

By Mary Lou on Saturday, January 11, 2003 - 11:42 am:

Thank you P. Smit...I read that at 4:30pm on April 15, 1905 the steamer "Northern Wave" struck the swing span. The steamer was almost stopped but the span toppled into the Portage. The ship was to collect a shipment of copper from the Quincy smelter. Ferries were called once again to carry goods and citizens across the portage. Thank you!! Mary Lou Curtin

TGIF = "Thank God I'm Finnish.", "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." I used to hate when Mom told me that one. Probably wishin' for this or that. :o) "Sharp as a tack, and just as flatheaded." was another. "Don't bite off more than you can chew." "Don't cross that bridge 'til you get to it." "Don't put all your eggs in one basket." "Cute as a bug." "Snug as a bug in a rug." "There's more pretty girls than one." "Why are there so many more horses asses than horses?" "Praise the Lord!" and "Amen." "In God we trust!." "'Nuff said?"

I liked being reminded of that neat saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"!!!

Birds of a feather flock together.
Don't bite off more than you can chew.
When it rains, it pours.
Stand for something or you will fall for anything.
It's as scarce as hen's teeth.
Don't wear your heart on your sleeve.
It's like looking for a needle in a haystack.
If the shoe fits, wear it.
Cat got your tongue?
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
