Oh man! This is a great picture. I remember driving by this on the way to back to Tech. Some some high school buddies and I took a trip to check out the campus the year before I graduated during the 78-79 winter -- late Febuary or so -- I can still remember how high the banks of Rt 41 were. It was like driving in a tunnel!

'78-'79 was my freshman year at MTU...the snow was amazing, even for a Marquette girl. We discuss snowfall quite a bit in Vermont & the snow thermometer has always been a way to prove my 'snow stories'. Thank you for the recent pictures of Presque Isle & the Hancock trolley stairs. Althought Vermont is a lovely place to live and raise a family, it can't come close to growing up in the U.P. Thanks again for keeping our hearts full of U.P. memories.

'78-'79 was my freshman year at Tech also. It was fantastic! Having grown up in the lower peninsula, I had never seen snow like that, altho I had seen pictures from my parents' childhood in northern Minnesota. I loved it! Winter is meant to be celebrated - so many fun things to do and especially fun with all that snow!

I was a forestry major at Tech in 1978-79. We measured the packed snow in May and it was 45 inches high. There was still snow in the woods in June! I thought it would never melt.

We had an exceptional lot of snow in the winter of 78/79 here in Devon - at least 12 inches. The winter of 62/63 had record snowfall as well, which may have been more than that of 78/79. We have had half an inch of snow today and I actually walked on some!! ( a real novelty as when we do have snow it doesn't usually hang around for long)

i had just grad high school in 77 from calumet, and in the work force in 78-79, as a sanitation engineer (garbageman) hanging off the back of one of those trucks, from calumet to baraga, during that heavy winter snowfall. the only positive about that winter is that in the cold, the "fumes" werent so bad, and sliding down the hills in houghton, you always had a snowbank to hit

So anyway I went town hey. Video inna store said
"Escanaba in Da Moonlight". I tink "wah", and took it
home. Then I'm tinking "not a good movie".

Speaking of the Snow Thermometer...
Wasn't there formerly a moveable crossbar on that thermometer that was regularly set to show the total snowfall to date?
Without the visual impact of that feature, what's the point in displaying the thermometer itself -- just to see the current level of snow-on-the-ground?
The information that used to be displayed in a very dramatic visual manner is now provided only in a couple of lines of text at the top of the page, with far less dramatic impact.

Has anybody noticed that the Bridge cam hasn't refreshed since the 4th. At least that is what it shows on my end.

The Averages need to be refigured to reflect "shhhh" global warming. Its a bit off since 92'. You could use a sled to mark the current levels except you might have to run it over with the Calumet garbage truck to get it lower on Da Stick EH. Lowest level recorded was 1930 31' Hmmmm wasnt that the dust bowl?

Winter of 70-71 was no bargin. A group of us stayed at Suomi over Thanksgiving. We TRIED to walk downtown in a raging storm. Didn't even make it to the fire station.
But in January on a cold Saturday night a couple of us took a guy's 1960 Falcon and drove up to Copper Harbor. The last 20 miles we saw nothing...the snow was hanging from the pines over the highway like white globs. I'll never forget it....the moon was bright, lite up everything...

Amazing how the winter of '79 keeps cropping up on
this website....it was a whopper! Unforgettable.

So Pittsburgh is playing at Tennessee come this Saturday. I'll be cheering for Pittsburgh!! I always liked that team. Remember Franco Harris?

When I was still living in Tamarack (late 50s) we had snow for 51 straight days. Some days just a few flakes but lots of dem were LOTS of snow! Dose were da days! Last night here in Cornell, we got a smattering of snow, like 37 flakes per acre. But 42 deg. this aft. Shirt sleeves. Tomorrow's sposed to be da same. Snowmobile don't run anyway!

Yup, Steelers got a BIG game this saturday. I really hope they do well. Last trip to Tennessee was not a memorable one but hopefully Tommy and the boys can make ammends. I hated to see the Pack go down like they did. First ever home playoff loss in franchise history. That's gotta hurt.

Al, thanks for passing along the article about the Gull Rock Lighthouse. My gg-uncle, Stephen Cocking along with his wife, Mary, were Lighthouse Keepers from 1869 to 1877. They must have been hearty people to have survived there that long.

In the winter of 52-53 as I remember it started at the end of the year snowing and it snowed about a month and a half straight. Don't remember how much snow we had that year but it was a bunch. By the way this was at the town of Forest Lake east of Chatham between there and Munising. Was born and raised east of Rock and when I was a kid there can remember snow 4 or 5 ft deep on the level but they don't get those kinds of snow anymore. Guess the weather has changed.

Ahaa, I was not hallucinating -- I found the evidence! There was formerly a pointer on the snow thermometer that was adjusted regularly to show the total snowfall to date!

I was looking at the past picture gallery and I narrowed the search for da pointer down to two years, Nov.1,1998 has the pointer and Nov.20,2000 doesn't have the pointer.

I miss the pointer too!! Please bring it back! I LOVE the U.P.!!
