It's clear and cold in the Copper Country this morning, with a festival of lights in the Portage Canal valley. This is the view up near Quincy mine. Our thanks to Taka for getting up so early.

By Gary/ Central New Jersey on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 07:49 am:

Wish I was there!!!

By pegg, fla on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 08:22 am:

Love the picture. It looks so quiet and serene, and it just became my wallpaper. Oh, how I miss the UP. Good Grief!!! You should hear the folks around the office this morning talking about how it's supposed to turn increasingly colder today with highs only in the low 60's, with low's tonight around 40. Please send me some snow!!!

By Mike P. Kingsford, Mi on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 08:22 am:

Wow is right, but where's all the snow. Headed to the copper country tomorrow am in search of some sledding snow. The Ski-Doo wants to run.

By Dan Kemp, Yardley, PA on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 08:23 am:

Gary,
I had a friend in Calumet High School named Gary.
I assume you are a displaced Yooper.
Come Back,
Dan

By Mike P. Kingsford Mi on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 08:35 am:

Should have asked this in my last post, but could anyone give me a snowmobile conditions report from the C.C. Thanks

By ML on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 08:58 am:

Looks like a magical, heavenly place...of course it is......could it be Camelot??? Beautiful picture.......

By Grandmas Pasties, MN on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 09:19 am:

What a great shot, Taka. Keep up the good work. Any shot of the bridge brings back such memories.

For Mike Kingsford: Try this site for snow info:

By me in the u.p. on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 10:21 am:

Mike,
I'm afraid the trails aren't in the best shape. Heard reports of rocks etc. on the trails. There are plenty of machines in town, but not great conditions. Let it snow!

By Mike P. Kingsford Mi on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 10:23 am:

To also loves UP. Thanks, but I check out the site everyday and the snow gauges never seem to change. Maybe the snowfall isn't changing either, I don't know. Guess I've got the no snow blues. Thanks again.

By Roger P. , downstate troll on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 10:37 am:

Mike, since when do you need snow?? Run it on the rocks, you can fix the sled up when your done!!!

By rose, wi on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 10:48 am:

By Naomi,East Lansing MI on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 11:05 am:

I am SO homesick after seeing this pic!
When I drive my 8-9 hours to get home for my visits,Seeing this bridge is always a happy welcome site: )
As a fellow displaced yooper, who grew up in Calumet/Laurium, Thanks Taka for my lil dose of back home!

By Frank C, NE Illinois on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 11:10 am:

If you're looking for U.P. snowfall amounts, go to http://JohnDee.com and click on "Snowcover" and "Snowfall Totals" to see the current amounts. He's a professional weather forecaster in Lake Linden and has some good info there on upcoming weather; click on "Forecast Text" and "Forecast Graphic".

For trail conditions, click on "Ask John", and also see another site's take on trail conditions at http://www.trailconditions.com/cgi-bin/newboards/states/mich_up/index.pl.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 12:07 pm:

WOW WOW WOW

Guess what my wallpaper is right now? WOW!

Shots like this just increase my misery of being away from the UP. Oh... A quick message for Pegg in Florida... I asked for snow first and haven't received it yet... So stand on line! :)

By Mary Ann, WY on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 12:34 pm:

What a GREAT photo. I always look forward to each photo of the day.

By Mary on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 12:55 pm:

Hey Mike P. in Kingsford:
This is your Sis......sorry, John Dee's gauges for measuring the snow haven't changed, because we really haven't had any measurable snow lately. Since we don't have a sled, I really can't tell you how the trails are either....Big help I am huh?...LOL

By Mary on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 12:56 pm:

P.S. to Mike P. in Kingsford:
I know it might not be as much fun, but if you can't ride, you still have me to entertain you!! :P

By pegg, fla on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 01:17 pm:

Hey Alex, You itchin' for a snowball fight? I'm sure that there is enough for everyone! .... But Maaaa, he hit me first....

By MJB, Wisconsin on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 01:48 pm:

My home was about four blocks straight down the hill from that view.
I remember a beautiful, beautiful morning of nearly the same scene, 30-35 years ago, when a "fog" had formed early in the morning, in bright sunlight yet. When we checked the thermometer, it was more than 30 below!! The "fog" was ice crystals floating in the air.

By Nancy, East Lansing on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 02:40 pm:

Hi - I just went home from work for lunch and found my Pasty Calendar in the mail. (A late Christmas gift from my husband). The photos are beautiful - thanks for compiling all the great shots into a calendar. I'm going to hang it in my office so I can dream of the beautiful UP all day, instead of working!!

PS I'm not from the UP, but have visited several times and think that all you folks who live there are the luckiest people in the world...

By wayne arnold, ironwood on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 02:59 pm:

hey there-

what ever happened to uncle sam's tinkering with the pasty laws? We should march right down to the capital with a truck load of pasties and hit the governor's house!

By RatFink Downstate on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 03:13 pm:

WOW! Over the years I have taken many pictures of the Bridge from this angle. This one paints a thousand words. Is there still someone who is on duty 24/7 at the Bridge? I used to get on the C.B. radio on my trips back to $Bay from Detroit & talk to the Coffee Maker who worked there.I also stood on top of the Bridge,& had to come down the stairs after the elevator went on the blink.Or so he said? Opp's I wasn't supposed to say that, they could lose their job for taking me up there.I was much younger then,& they were older.Must be retired now? I'd move back up there if I can have that job?

By Alex Tiensivu on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 03:15 pm:

Alright, Pegg... This is war now... You know that, right? :)

By Fran,Ga on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 05:55 pm:

Pegg and Alex,we have had snow here all afternoon!! The problem is the flakes are so small you can hardly see them. Just pathetic! However it is very cold. Gosh I wish we would get a good snow.

By Justin in kazoo on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 05:55 pm:

Remember the ski resorts need the white stuff to keep the economy going, so let's all......

TINKSNO!!

By Fran,Ga on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 06:02 pm:

The view from the hill is spectacular. It definitely should be on the calender next year. It still amazes me that each day we are treated to yet another beautiful photo.I believe the views are unending!!We are so fortunate

To Brother-in-law Charlie of Clarkston so that was how you were able to slip away to come back home for Christmas. It was nice to see you. Hope you have a great new year.

By Scott, Wisconsin on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 10:41 pm:

Wow I like the pictures, I visited last
summer and found a real sense of place,
history and lore. I have been reading books
about the U.P since. I will be back this
summer. Unspoiled beauty in the Copper Country.

By Greta, Ca on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 12:25 am:

Nancy from Lansing, I agree with you 100%. I have my PastyCam calendar too, and have it hanging right next to the shade I pull up every morning when I wake up. To see that beautiful picture of the bridge every morning (January's), I must confess, it most certainly solidifies the goal of moving back home. Today it was 86 here!! It's January!! I want snow, ice, cold, and clouds for a change!! This shot was a spectacular one!! Thank you!

By me on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 12:40 am:

Well..there's always this site...

http://www.keweenaw.org/snowmobiling.htm

and I was doing a tad bit of evesdropping in the Loading Zone and the American Legion in Lake Linden tonight..and it sounds to me like there IS snow in the Keweenaw(remember...I'm evesdropping in the local pubs!)...although the trails around here (Houghton county) right now are either dirt or deep water. (The snow IS supposed to start soon...)

Be safe! We ARE picky about our hood ornaments!

Welcome, Thank You, and have fun! Spend yer money~Lots of folks depend on it here!

By Alex Tiensivu on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 11:11 am:

Pegg, Fran, and Alex: Snowball Fight 2003. ROFL LOL What a concept!

Hey! Someone stole the top of the bridge this morning. Wow, it's foggy up there. (And don't tell me it's sunrays... This time I KNOW what I saw!)

By Katie Nebraska on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 11:36 am:

this website is just great. I grew up in the Up, and coming to this site reminds me of everything! I order pasties all the time, and look at the pictures on pasty cam. Keep it up!

By Greta, Ca on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 12:22 pm:

Thanks me, that site cooled me off nicely.

By me on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 12:29 pm:

My pleasure Greta!

By pegg, fla on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 05:56 pm:

Geez that was fun guys. I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some hot chocolate. Let's make an annual event out of it, Eh?

January 3, 2004. 2nd Annual Pasty Cam Snowball Fight.

Hey Charlie, think you could get us displaced yoopers an appropriate picture for next year's event?

By Alex, All Snowballed Out on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 07:34 pm:

Works for me! (But next time, watch my neck... Snow going down the front of my shirt... Brrrr!)

Charlie has a year to find us a picture! :)

By pegg, fla on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 08:04 pm:

But you put it down my back first, you rat. My toes are kinda cold, I'm going in.

By Fran,Ga on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 09:36 pm:

That was fun! My face is still frosty from all those exploding snowballs. I am starting to warm up. Can't wait for next year! If you guys were here you could share some of my son's B.D. cake(Carrot) and Raisin -Rum ice cream

By Kay Havens, Mt. Morris, MI on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 10:05 pm:

Hoping for the chance to see this myself one of these days.

By P. Olson on Sunday, January 5, 2003 - 06:31 am:

Sure makes me miss home. Here in the Twin Cities they don't know what a lot of snow is. But then you don't have a lot now. Coming home in March for skiing, get a little more by then please?

By Karla, South Range on Sunday, January 5, 2003 - 06:21 pm:

Hi Mike P. in Kingsford and everyone else. Check out www.upsnowmobilerentals.com for local weather and trail conditions. It has the updated Chamber of Commerce trail report and a section reporting what the snowmobilers are saying about the trails on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Happy Trails!

By Sam, Wisconsin on Tuesday, January 7, 2003 - 01:48 am:

Lived not far from where pic was taken of bridge in Lower Pewabic location, 78, 79 80. Ran the lift at Mt. Ripley, and would snowshoe to shack, phone in, do my shift and snowshoe home. Also drove bus taking students to ski lessons from Tech every hour. Anyone know John Rugani? Would like to hear about him
