When Joe Kirkish sent today's photos to me, he mentioned that this is his favorite spot in the Keweenaw. With the sun shining so brightly this day, he had to stop and capture the beauty of the ice and snow scene.
The first three pictures give us a good idea of the amount of ice that has already formed on the shores in Great Sand Bay. Look at how blue Lake Superior is there. If it wasn't for the ice in the photo, this could have been taken on any summer day, too. But the ice gives it away that it is definitely a winter scene. I'm not sure if it's the lighting from the sun or if that ice really is that sandy and dirty looking out there. From the looks of the second photo, I'd say it is that dirty, most likely having been laced with the blowing sand while forming.
Joe sure has a trained eye for capturing shots that the rest of us might just pass right on by and miss out on the unique things that Mother Nature creates without effort. I'm talking about the frozen tracks on the road. What interesting patterns they have formed, showing that even though the parking lot is completely empty and abandoned looking, there have been many visitors that have braved the cold winds there.
Thanks for making the wintry trek to Lake Superior and taking us with you to your favorite place, Joe!

You're right, Jbuck, winter is the best time to visit the beaches, whether the Lakes or oceans, a lot less hubbub! Beautiful, Joe!

Great pictures. The mixture of ice and sand form some unique patterns.
