I left early for work this past Wednesday, just hoping to catch either the Laurium Village crew or the Calumet Village crew clearing the main roads downtown in their usual manner and I lucked out in Calumet. These pictures don't quite do it justice, but the crew plows all the snow on 5th Street and 6th Street into one long berm down the middle of the street and then they come along with the snow blower and dump trucks to remove it. It is quite the operation and I'm always amazed at that pile of snow dividing the highway in two like that.
The third photo is on 6th Street in Calumet, right in front of the Post Office. When I got out of my truck to snap that picture, I couldn't believe how tall that berm in the road really was. It was at least as high as my shoulders, so I'm guessing just short of 5 feet high. Needless to say, we've gotten dumped on this past week. We know it's coming, but even for us seasoned Yoopers, this is pretty early to have this much snow already.
Good morning, Mary. Why is the date October 23?

City sidewalks, non busy sidewalks....that is an awful lot of early snow!

If anyone has taken the time to read the Farmer's Almanac, it summarises that the upper Great Lakes can expect a winter much like last year. Time to break out the swampers and tuque!!
Speaking of berms of snow Mary, you'll have to ask Nat sometime (maybe over Winter Carnival when we're there) about those Calumet snow berms and early morning driving from someone who just came from New Mexico for her first UP winter....

Sure looks different from the view in September when we were there. Brrrrr! It really is too early for this!

Neat shots, Mary! We're getting 'hit' this morning here in southern OH....it started during the night and is still going at it.:<

Those are great shots depicting the not so fun part of snow, the removal. There was ice on the lake in June and snow on the ground in October. Seems like I barely had time time to change into my swimming suit before the leaves were falling.

Thanks for sharing these close-up pictures of all the snow you have up there. It sure sounds like it is going to be one tough winter. Stay safe!

Just so cool! Wish I was U.P. there with Marty trucking thru the woods, what a miserable life change for me right now.
