If you tuned in on Saturday, you already know that we received our first measurable snowfall here UP North and even though it's way too early and won't stay on the ground for long, it still makes beautiful photo opportunities.

We have Elaine Robbins to thank for today's shots. She was out bright and early, hiking the trails around Calumet Lake while the sun was just coming up. Elaine commented about the frosty morning and how wonderful it is to have these trails around the lake and located only blocks away from her home, besides. The snow really does brighten things up and make for some pretty scenery.

In case you're wondering where Calumet Lake is located, here's a Google map screenshot to help you out:

Location of Calumet Lake

That was my first question...where's Calumet lake?
PHENOMENAL pics!!

Beautiful photos, Elaine, but I've been dreading seeing snow scenes...again.;)

I think I see animal tracks in the snow.

No snow out here yet and 50's today. Maybe by the
weekend, though. Nice pictures!

If I am not mistaking,Calumet Lake is in the
Centennial Heights Location. The photos are beautiful.
If we get out and enjoy the beauty-somehow it does not
seem so cold.

Gorgeous photos this morning! The Keweenaw is beautiful any time of the year. Those who live there should feel very special!

Quite simply, 'Calumet Lake' was more popularly known as 'Calumet Dam' when I grew up on Pine Street. It was my playground growing up as a kid. The Lion's Club and Calumet Township have worked to fix it up and make it a nice place for recreational activities. Sure would like to see it used more often in the summers for local activities. They have picnic tables, grills, kids playground, horseshoe pits set up there. Nice trail around the Dam is about a mile and a quarter long. :)

A reality check....Autumn is fading, and winter is just around the corner...

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, November 3, 2014 - 11:49 am:

When Dr. Nat and I lived in Red Jacket Shaft Location, Calumet Lake was literally a stone's throw away! We used to walk around there a lot, even in winter. I've heard the entire area around the lake has been improved, so the next time we're UP that way, we'll have to see for ourselves....

I really do detest snow so I can't say that the pictures are pretty but I can say that they certainly are scenic.

Hi
My cousin's daughter, who has lived downstate in Jackson, MI all her life, started at Northern Michiga University this fall. We will have to see how she does with regard to the (generally) colder, snowier, longer winters in the UP.

Beautiful Autumn snow.

All the best to the new NMU Wildcat! Know she'll love living in the UP!

Go Cats GO!!!

The pictures are beautiful with the snow. Although I
am not a fan of winter either, like so many others
that have posted. My first question was, where is
Calumet Lake? Thanks for posting the Google maps, as
I was going to look it up. I grew up in Calumet, but
moved when I was just a teenager, and I didn't even
know Calumet Lake existed. Another reason to visit
Calumet, so I can see it in person.

Yes indeed, you just go north on 6th Street; beyond Spruce Street Sixth Street becomes County Road C-11 (as shown on the map), and curves around Calumet Lake then continues north into Centennial Heights, about 3/4 of a mile from Spruce Street. (My Mom and Dad were both born in Centennial Heights, seven years apart, however they never met 'til years later in Detroit.)

Best access is at Lion's Park. Take Waterworks St. off of Pine Street (M203). It takes you right into Lion's Park and to Calumet Lake access, parking, picnic areas, and trail access.
