One of Frank Jezek's fall duties is to prune the Barberry bushes around his Ontonagon property. But before he pruned them down this year, he snapped a few pictures so we could all see how beautifully the bush turns color and sprouts bright red berries as adornment in the fall.
What a wonderful way to hedge your property, but you have to be careful, too, as these bushes are covered in thorns. Pruning them back each fall, keeps them filling out and shaped well in the spring when the new growth begins again.
Thanks to Frank for bringing us a look at a different fall color we get to enjoy here UP North.

I didn't know that, jbuck. See, we learn something new every day.

Barberry bushes have recently been found to be a favorite place to harbor ticks! Some are calling it the "tick Bush"....think this needs a bit more research....the thorns are bad enough though...

I not only learned that they are edible, I also learned that they exist. I'd not heard of them before. It is a pleasant looking plant. It wouldn't increase the worry about ticks where I am. The 49849 area has more ticks than a 100 year clock.

They'd probably make an excellent wine. I've heard of wine made from other more exotic things like dandelions.
