Bob Gilreath always makes me wish I had been along on the adventures he takes, even if it's just a walk along the Houghton side of the Portage Canal at lunch time. I think that says something for the photos he snaps while out and about...if they make you wish you were there, then I think he's doing something right.
His shutter was quite busy this day, snapping different recognizable landmarks across the way in Ripley, like the Ski Hill, Ripley School, the Smelter campus and just Ripley in general. The colors were still hanging on there and as Bob put it so well, "We've lost most of the Maple's bright reds, but the oaks, aspen and Birches are still showing their golden tones."
I was actually pleasantly surprised yesterday, driving from Lake Linden to Houghton and back, just how many of the leaves are still hanging on. We're enjoying every minute of it here UP North!

There are still plenty of leaves left on those trees. More than I thought there would be. Very nice colorful pictures of the canal and surroundings.

Is it just me or were the fall colors exceptionally beautiful this year? I stared in awe at the exact sights Mr. Gilreath so expertly photographed!

I'm enjoying fall vicariously through all your wonderful photos. Here in northeast GA we have almost no color yet, and I'm not sure we're going to have much. What little there is is muted and some leaves are falling without even turning.
I always look forward to your fall photos, remembering the one amazing fall I spent UP there.

I thought that first photo was a fake - a small scale size made by somebody - like the scale model photos taken the other day. So surreal and perfect! Loved the last smelter photo too; thank you for posting these photos today; every one was gorgeous! :)
