This year's crazy, quick summer has rapidly morphed into fall. With the blinding pace for us - back and forth between the Copper Country and Marquette - it's been a challenge to keep up with the daily updates. Along the way we also get questions that we try to answer (especially on the Facebook page), and today's Shoebox Memory is one of them.

I promised someone an answer this summer to the question, "Has the bridge cam ever recorded a ship passing under the Lift Bridge?" I remembered somewhere back in the archives where Daryl Laitila was alerted to the arrival of the Denis Sullivan (back in 2005) and she captured the Bridge Cam frame as well as a number of close ups standing down in the Ramada parking lot. This weekend I happened to stumble across the gallery page where she uploaded them. Click on the first thumbnail and hit the little filmstrip icon in the upper left hand corner to see the slideshow.

We certainly have missed Daryl since her passing in 2012. We've never quite caught up with all of the little things she did on the website, like the monthly archive calendars, and the annual Pasty Cam calendar preparation, which she always quietly completed without ever having to be reminded. I guess for me this Shoebox Memory is as much about the photographer as it is about the subject. And that brings to mind all of the contributors to the website, the hundreds of amateur and professional photographers who have captured the whole gamut of life in the U.P., from awesome natural wonders, to historic sign and building, to regular everyday life, like cleaning the chimney to prepare for Winter (see yesterday's Pasty Cam).

Thanks for your occasional visits to these pages, and especially to all who have added to them, in comments and pictures during these 16+ years. Have a good week :o)

I couldn't agree more! Daryl was such a sweet soul and a real joy to talk with. Hard to believe it's been 2 years already since her passing.

No Charlie, it's all of us who visit these pages regularly and contribute our photos and knowledge that should be thanking you (and the rest of the Pasty crew) for keeping up this little slice of the UP. I've often said if there's anything we can do to help with Pasty, you only need to say the word. I know that's kind of hard to do when you're so far away; however, (fingers crossed) that might be changing in the near future....... ;-)

I echo what Paul said. We're so grateful for everything that everybody does to keep this site going. And it's strange because I was just thinking about Daryl and I can not believe that she's been gone that long either.

These pictures are so good. I just love them.

I also echo The Capt & Deb! They both expressed my very same thoughts perfectly!

I agree...and a neat slideshow, too!

Janie T, how big will that miniature Australian dog become? Not a dog for house and small yard?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, October 6, 2014 - 09:13 am:

I echo all of the above, Charlie!

Janie, that's a sweet cuddly puppy!:>

Thanks for the great shots, Charlie. How is Edie doing? Have you wrapped up the treatments? We pray they were successful and that you can rest is your own home together.

Tom, he should mature to about 15-16 in. tall and 25-30 lbs. He is going to be a house dog with us, a small yard word be ok providing a couple good walks to supplement. They are a member of the herding breed so they love approval and love a job to do. When dad had cattle we had a standard size Aussie that worked cattle like no other!

BTW Please note the ad just above. If you are a gun person do yourself a favor by contacting USCCA. Their magazine is outstanding.
