The Keweenaw County Historical Society recently celebrated the completion of a new foundation for the Phoenix Church of the Assumption, with a Mass celebrated by Fr. Corbin Eddy. Hymns about a "strong foundation" were chosen for the service, such as The Church's One Foundation. Today's first photo depicts the choir and Father Eddy leading the hymn at the beginning of the Mass.

The Historical Society obtained the church back in 1985 and since then have made a number of unsuccessful attempts at preserving the foundation in order to keep the church building from settling and shifting. The historic mining era church was badly in need of some shoring up of its foundation.

Money was raised to get the foundation restoration project underway, through grants, fundraising and memorials for Louise Marta, wife of Trustee and Chairman of the Church Museum, Jack Marta, who also supplied us with today's photos. The new foundation, seen in the third photo, was completed by Robert #Buzz# Johnson. In the fourth photo, you can see what a mess the old foundation was and the work that had to be done to replace the old with the new.

The last photo is a shot that was taken by Brad Uren, back before the project had gotten underway. From a distance like that, you can't really tell there were any repairs needed, but now with the job complete, the historic church has a strong foundation for many years to come. I think Father Eddy said it best at the service, when he told the attendees that the church is now "a happy place."

Special thanks to Ginny Jamison, for supplying us with the information here today.

I agree with Thomas ~ that's a beautiful building!
These days, all churches need a 'strong foundation'! God bless them!

I was thinking the same thing, Alex. So glad they could raise the funds to repair the foundation and keep this church standing tall.
