Just for comparison … Life in "Sunny Phoenix, AZ". From NWS Phoenix:
(click →) "Record rainfall & widespread flooding across Phoenix Metro Area".
(Last weekend, Sunday 9/7/2014.)
They're saying this was a "1000 year flood event"! And as of today there are some neighborhoods in Mesa that are still awash, mainly because the AZ DOT's freeway underpass pumping stations, canals and retention basins were designed for a 50-year flood event!
I have personally experienced three "100-year flood events" before this in over 44 years in Phoenix.
Quote:"I never saw so much trouble with water until I moved to da desert!"
This where the "normal" annual rainfall is something short of 8"!
In this case, the culprit was Hurricane Norbert moving up the coast of Baja California, and pumping much moisture into Arizona. I guess we can look forward to a repeat performance from Hurricane Odile this week, then tropical depression 16E soon after that. Maybe I should be building an ark. :-)
Perverse twist of fate: A friend moved from Phoenix to New Orleans (Actually Mandeville, across from NOLA on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain) some years ago, post-Katrina. So now who gets the fallout of hurricanes? Go figure!
