A number of past Shoebox Memories included photos by Fredrick J. Haun, provided by his grandson Paul Meier. This week Paul is back:
I have been working through more of my Grandfather's photos. Attached are two made in Eagle River around 1925. Back when the Government declared the Eagle River lighthouse surplus and auctioned it off, John Vertin was the successful bidder. He was most likely inspired to do this by his wife, Katherine Long, who was born in Eagle River just across the bridge. The lighthouse became the summer "camp" for the extended Vertin family for decades. Since I am the Grandson of Katherine's sister - I had the pleasure of staying there on several occasions.
The second photo shows Kate on the porch steps with at least one daughter peering out the door. The first shows all three Vertin daughters, Cresence (the tallest), Eleanor, and Dorothy (probably the one on the right, it was way before my time to know them that well). The reason for dressing like boys is lost in time, but they seem to be enjoying the lark. The wisps of hair, the shoes, and Dorothy's blouse give the ruse away. Whatever, it is summer at the lighthouse and the decorum required in Calumet did not apply, and they would be more serious in the future.
Speaking of larks, we threw in the last photo of my wife's dad probably about a decade later, after his sister Jane had dressed him up to trick some visiting relatives. They introduced him as "Cousin Mary" and got away with the prank until somebody noticed little Jerry was missing ;>)
Thanks to Paul and to all who share their U.P. memories on the Pasty Cam. Have a good week :o)
