I'm always quite thankful that there are folks like Philip Odum, that pay attention to when the Aurora Borealis displays are going to take place in the skies over the U.P. and that they give up precious sleeping hours to capture them for us all to enjoy.
This first shot today is one of my favorites of all time, with the reflection of the night lights in the water on both sides of the beach. There is just such a calm about it, with the still water on the beach and the waters of Lake Superior barely moving, too. Outstanding in my mind's eye.
Now having said that, it doesn't mean that I don't like Philip's second shot of the Northern Lights, as that one is quite beautiful, too. The stars show up so much more in this one and Philip may have used a special lens to make it curve like it does. It always amazes me, the splendor that can be found in the night sky here UP North.

These Northern Lights were expected to be seen as far south as Kansas, we in Eastern Iowa had a cloudy night, so we missed them. Bummed!
