Frank Jezek found today's fungi photos right in his daughter's backyard in the Ontonagon area. What a different looking fungi in those first two photos. Frank mentioned that his wife thought it kind of looked like brains growing in the hole of the tree and I tend to agree with her on that one. It sure is odd looking, like whatever it is it's oozing out of the tree.

The other two mushroom photos are of the more common types we see around the U.P. I'm not going to pretend like I know what kind they are or if they're safe to eat, so if anyone knows a bit more about these interesting fungi, feel free to chime in.

Frank's last photo is taken near his home in Ontonagon, with the sun setting for the day and coloring the sky a hue of pink. I thought this was the perfect way to commemorate the 13th anniversary of 9/11 and give everyone a chance to pause in their day and remember those who were killed that day and the countless lives that were changed because of that tragic event. We remember and honor them all.

From a distance, I thought the first pic looked like
a left side-shot of a mad squirrel or something!

I think someone threw a pasty at that tree...cooked to perfection, I might add.

I don't know Alex, the crust seems a little "wrinkly" for my taste. ;-)

As I'm sure some of you have noticed, I haven't been around much lately. Between traveling to photograph localities of geologic interest (state-side and foreign), being an editor for a couple new geoscience books, and a two week vacation to Scotland to see family in July, it has been a busy several months. Add to that I'm chairing a session at the annual Geological Society of America conference in Vancouver BC next month and the co-author of a paper being presented at the New Mexico Mineral Symposium in November, you can now see why I've been a stranger to PastyLand. I have been reading everyone's posts, just have had other things on the mind than posting/replying.

I'm still checking in every now and again though, and I hope to be more visible to Pasty very soon once everything slows down.
