Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, August 28, 2014 - 02:19 pm:

In Eagle River over the weekend, there was a ceremony honoring the 100th anniversary of the Douglass Houghton monument. Charlie mentioned it on Sunday's Shoebox Memory, with a picture depicting Douglass Houghton himself. He also had a few pictures over on our Pasty Central Facebook page from the event.

Dorothy Jamison, along with Ginny Jamison contributed today's photos of the event for a little better look at the search that was also conducted to try to find the Time Capsule reported to have been hidden in the mass of rock that makes up the monument. In case you don't recognize him, that's our very own webmaster, Charlie Hopper in the light blue shirt, who is chipping away at the mortar holding the rocks, in the hopes of discovering where the Time Capsule was hidden.

Charlie mentioned in his notes on Sunday, that even after removing the heavy plaque and several large and small stones, the Time Capsule was nowhere to be found. He went on to say that the Search Committee is hopeful that the mason who will be doing repairs on the monument, will have better success than they did over the weekend. The Time Capsule was placed in the structure on October 8, 1914, with the intention of having it opened 100 years later, so Charlie's theory is that perhaps it won't reveal itself until we reach that century mark date in a little over a month.

Special thanks to Dorothy for providing the first four photos today…in her note that accompanied them, she made mention that Charlie rarely includes himself in these types of events, so she wanted to share the shots of him chipping away at the mortar, as he has been the "keeper" of this monument since moving to Eagle River. And right along the same line of thought, Ginny sent in the bottom photo, saying that she wanted to share it, since Dorothy is in it (she's the lady with the camera pack over her shoulder), and she's usually always behind the camera.

Let's hope for better luck finding that Time Capsule later in the fall, when the entire monument is slated for restoration, including tuck pointing and polishing the tablet.

Wonder if they could use a scope with a camera on
the end to see if anything is visible inside?

Bob & my brother stopped last Sunday to check out this statue when they were UP there on the motorcycle trip.

With all that work, I sure hope something is found that makes it all worth it!

Greetings to all:

Philip has a very good point if the base of the monument is the original base from 1914. Build the base, place the time capsule and lower the large headstone.

jbuck also has a valid point but use an industrial X-Ray on the monument to see what is inside the monument base. It would be simple enough to set up and less costly than chipping away rock. The X-Ray would need to look at the base with cross directions.

Marquette might have an industrial X-Ray service that could help.
