Battery D celebrated 30 years of reenacting at Fort Wilkins in a big way, recently. They hosted a wedding during the events of the weekend, which was open to the public to attend. Virgina Ruona married Nicholas Lambert and she shared today's photos with us, along with information about the special day's events.

"Our wedding was part of Battery D's 30th anniversary at Fort Wilkins, taking place in the morning after the first cannon firing. In addition to the wedding, our family stayed in authentic tents and ate food from that time in history also, including an era appropriate wedding cake. Since rations were scarce during the war, ladies would all make a small loaf of cake and bring it to a wedding. The host would then put it together with fruit filling. The ladies of the battery made one for us and it was a treat! The cakes were different flavors, heavier spice cake with cooked apple filling.

My dress wasn't a traditional white dress since during that era women often got married in their Sunday Best because they usually only had a nice hoop dress or two. Nick made all of the dresses, children's clothes and most of the men's wear. The event ran from Friday morning until Sunday night, with the wedding taking place on Saturday morning."
It sure looks like a memorable and fun day for all, including the kids playing games that required the use of their imagination and running about.
Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Nicholas Lambert!

I thoroughly enjoyed all of the pictures today. The
wedding pic of the couple, with the lake and
reflections in the background is especially
beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

In two years, 2016, it will be the fortieth anniversary of the Fort Wilkins costumed role playing interpreter program. This is the daily summer program that represents actual life and happenings that occurred at Fort Wilkins during 1870 by Co.K. including a soldier, officer, officers wife and post laundress. Everything that the interpreters talk about has been researched and is historically accurate directly from military records in the National Archives and other sources of the time period. Back in the late 1970's early 80,s the State of Michigan wasn't sure it was going to continue funding the program because they weren't sure if it was popular and worth the expenditure! Amazing how time flies.
