We're back at the Straits of Mackinac again today, but this time in the dark. My cousin, Karen Marsh and her family were UP here for a visit from downstate last week and on their way north, they spent the night in Mackinaw City where Karen snapped the first two photos. The Big Mac lit up at night is something else to see and Karen captured the display in all its glory. Her photo of the Mackinaw City Lighthouse at night is great, too. I love the way the light accentuates the three windows and the brickwork around the top of the light.
Karen's next three photos of Lake Michigan, were taken along US 2. It's quite a different shoreline than most of Lake Superior, although there are rocks there, as you can see in the photos. The waves were really rolling in that day, too, so I'm guessing it must have been a windy day to have the lake all stirred up like that.
We're actually quite lucky here in the U.P., to be surrounded by three of the five Great Lakes, Superior, Michigan and Huron.

U.S. 2 along Lake Michigan is a neat drive. Night life on the Big Mac is a very impressive picture!

Awesome! I love that today's shot was later in the day as I have a question for some of the long time Yoopers. How often to they repaint the lift bridge? It can't be too often. In the 8 years I was up there I never saw them do it. It certainly is less then the 20 plus years its taking to repaint the Mighty Mac. Although to be fair that job is never ending. Mary, the other thing I noticed was that the water levels are higher. It's exciting to see! The numbers last I heard were 14.5 for Superior and that is draining into the lower lakes. Michigan and Huron (which to the behest of Yoopers everywhere as well as myself could actually be considered one lake making it larger then Superior. Thankfully nothing can be changed. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0001804.html) are up 5.5 inches.) Regardless of anything it is the Great Lakes State and really rocks!

Hi We can see the white bridge pillars by day and the lit-up bridge by night from our cabin near Cheboygan (weather permitting). They are 20 miles off and so pretty tiny but can still be seen with the naked eye.
