Laura Gauthier and her family spent some time around the Straits of Mackinac and it sure looks like they had a good time. They did some biking around Mackinac Island, stopping at Arch Rock for a great photo opportunity with their kiddos.

Then back on the mainland, they toured Fort Michilimackinac, which has a great view of the Mackinac Bridge as a bonus to all the historic events being re-enacted for the folks that visit. It's a wonderful way for the kids (and adults) to learn the history of the days when the fort was an active military post. From Laura's photos, you can see that it gets quite hands on, with her youngest dressed up in the military uniform, getting ready to stir the pot.

After that, the kids did a bit of canoeing, getting a feel for how it was to cross that five mile span of water between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace in the days before the Big Mac was built.

Laura's last photo sure made me chuckle. That's her oldest boy, modeling a horse head mask that they found in one of the gift shops over on Mackinac Island. I couldn't resist adding it to today's group of photos, since I figured it would give everyone else a reason to smile on Monday! ;-)

Fun stuff!! I remember doing this stuff myself.
when people ask me for ideas for vacations, I always
mention this. You just can't go wrong.

;-D Thanks for the Monday morning laugh, Laura and Mary!
My husband, daughter and son-in-law did the bike tour a few years ago and loved it!

Thanks for sharing, Laura, great photos! Love that first image; biking around Mackinac Island should be on everyone's list. About seven miles, almost no hills, and the view is unbeatable. Did it on roller skis once or twice too!

Looks like the ultimate bicycle riding place! A friend has that same horse head mask, she wears it out among her horses, the reactions from her horses are hilarious!

It looks like they had a great time seeing the sights of the area. The Butterfly House is another interesting thing to see when on Mackinac Island. Many, many different kinds of butterflies flitting around in there.

Nice pix! One place I've never been to...Mac Island.

It would be a neat place to ride your Gold Wing, Alex......if it were allowed.;>

I have done the reenactment at the fort many times. Great place.

Great shots Laura..looks like the children are
having a blast...

Actually, the first pic reminds me of cruising north on US-41 on the west shore of Keweenaw Bay. Blue-blue water on the right, green trees on the left and not a cloud in the blue sky, it was a fantastic ride. I remember thinking that if I had a million dollars in the bank, I couldn’t feel any more content than how I felt at that moment.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, August 4, 2014 - 03:30 pm:

Bob and my brothers will be motorcycling the entire Keweenaw in 3 weeks.

Janie, inre your profile pic...my parents had a '40 Chevy too, but theirs was a 4-door sedan. Needed the room for 4 daughters.

Love Mackinac Island and the Straits area.

Shirley, after this car, and 7 kids later, the 2 doors became station wagons!

By Jose (Jtraveler) on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 - 09:24 am:

The Straits area and surrounds have always been a favorite destination of ours. Even our two boys take their kids there to vacation and make memories of their own.
