When Liz Siivola sent me the first photo of what she called a Golden Beard Chipping Sparrow, she had me, hook line and sinker, until I read her email. It's really a Chipping Sparrow, with a beak full of Liz's Golden Retriever's hair. She said it flitted back and forth most of the morning, collecting the hair to pad its nest and she thought it would fun to send it as a "rare bird sighting", for the rest of us to enjoy!
While Cardinals aren't really rare, they are more uncommon in the Keweenaw, but Bob Gilreath said this male Cardinal and its mate visit their feeders daily, singing and dining. I can't say I've seen very many this far north, so spotting one is always a treat. I can only imagine how fun it is to see one at your feeder daily!

That bird had me wondering: Was I naughty or nice?" And I was ready to make out my Xmas list.

Just love that 'Golden Beard Chipping Sparrow'. Many years ago we had a pair of Tufted Titmice that gathered hair from our dog. (We had thrown it off the deck as we brushed her.) We always wondered if those babies barked instead of sang! LOL!

Interesting bit of trivia: Chipping Sparrows were once called Hair Birds as they lined their nests with horse hair, back in the days when horses were a common means of transportation, and therefore there were more of them around. I have found nests lined with horse hair in the vicinity of modern-day horse stables.

We have lotsa cardinals down my way, but no 'bearded' chipping sparrows.;> However, if we did, they could build a whole condo with the hair my kitty sheds!
