The 6th Annual Music Fest at the Historic School in Gay, MI, was held this past weekend and from the looks of the photos of the event from Dick Mintken, they had a good turnout.

The folks that attended were treated to the music of several local bands and musicians, including the Singing Sheriff Ron Lahti and Dick Storm band, the Dodge Street Band, The World's most dangerous Polka and Variety Band and the harmonizing Noteworthy Chorus. Some people brought lawn chairs to sit and enjoy the tunes, while others jumped up out of their seats and danced to the beat.

There was also a silent auction going on during the festivities, with all proceeds and donations going to the Keweenaw County Historical Society for the restoration and renovation of the School, now in its 7th year.

I had the opportunity to tour the School building while in Gay for the 4th of July and it's amazing the work these dedicated folks have put into this restoration project. They really have the inside looking good, with one of the classrooms filled with the old time desks from back in the day. There are also numerous photos of folks that attended the school, along with information that they have from those days of learning back when the school was in operation. What a great project, preserving the history of education in that little community of Gay!

As I recall, "The Worlds Most Dangerous Polka and Variety Band" also played at the fund raiser for the Church heritage center that was hit by lightning last fall. Great job Jim & Teri. I forgot the banjo players name.

Looks like they were having a lot of fun at the annual party. Made me wonder if anyone from the copper country has looked in on the restoration of the Beechwood School, which is a one room schoolhouse in what was once a thriving community between Iron River and Watersmeet on US2 about 7-8 miles west of IR. It's of particulaar interest to me as it's where I grew up and where my dad's oldest sister was the first (I believe) teacher assigned there in 1914. They just celebrated the centenary od the shool thi spring.

OOPS! Didn't finish editing before sending. The last sentence should read "They just celebrated the centenary of the school this spring."
