When Brenda Leigh sent me today's pictures, she told me these flowering shrubs are barberry bushes. Good thing she clued me in, because I had no idea what they were. She said they normally will blossom in the spring, but since we've had so much unseasonable cold weather in the U.P. this year, Brenda figures we're lagging behind in the seasons, so these bushes blossomed later than normal.

She said the first two photos are a Barberry bush and warned about getting too close to one of these, as they have terrible little thorns that will snag you immediately if you get too close. They sure are pretty, so I guess it's best to enjoy this bush from a distance.

The next two pictures are of a Crimson Pygmy Barberry bush, according to Brenda. These blossoms remind me of an apple blossom with the shape. What a beautiful flower with the contrast of the crimson middle, against the bright white. I love that the leaves are a dark crimson backdrop for the white of the petals, too. Beautiful!

Barberry is something that is new to me as well. I learned something again today. They certainly are attractive.

Barberry is one of those aggressive aliens, not native to our Michigan woods, but turning up there more and more because birds spread the seeds from the bushes planted around homes. Sorry, but please, think twice before choosing to plant it.
