Another stop Brenda Leigh made while in Munising, was at the Munising Bay Shore Park, where she found this Community Bread Oven and the interesting story behind it and the "Cooking Carberrys".

You can read the story yourself in the photo about these wonderful citizens who are willing to go through so much work to help other folks in their community. It started out as an outdoor bread oven, but evolved into a weekly event on Tuesdays, cooking pizza in the outdoor oven to sell for various non-profit organizations to earn money. Members of the groups have to attend a "Pizza Camp", in order to learn what they need to do and how to make the pizzas for the day of their pizza baking event.

The Carberrys have been able to give back to their community, about $15,000.00 a year, with the Outdoor Oven and the kindness of their hearts in organizing a way for folks to pull together and raise money for good causes. What a great idea!

Gluten-Free Pasties near St Ignace?

Next week my son and daughter-in-law will spend a couple days in the eastern U.P. to celebrate their 2nd anniversary. It will be her first time in the U.P. after growing up in Colorado and New Mexico.

I'd like to treat her to a pasty . . . but . . . she has Celiac disease and is on a gluten-free diet. Is there any place in the St Ignace/Soo/Newberry area where we might find a gluten-free pasty? Yeah, I know you can't get a genuine pasty more than a dozen miles or so east of Marquette, but I've had some pretty good imitations around St Ignace. And of course any kind of breadstuff labeled "Gluten Free" is mediocre at best. But I still want to try.

I made several attempts using search engines. They turned up a bunch of personal recipes for gluten-free pasties that are "as good as" the real thing (see comments, above) . . . and even one place in Negaunee that serves them . . . but I need a restaurant in the eastern U.P. where we can get them.

Any suggestions or help are appreciated!
