When Cindy Freeman visits the U.P., she has to cross the Mackinac Bridge. On her most recent visit, she had a hard time seeing the Big Mac, since there was a bank of fog covering the middle section, with the towers rising mysteriously from the center. I’ve crossed this five mile span a number of times, but never in the fog like this. I’d miss looking out over the water and seeing Mackinac Island or searching Lake Huron and Lake Michigan to see if there are any freighters headed under the Bridge.

Cindy also stopped and snapped a couple additional foggy shots. A simple one of a seagull doing a bit of rock sitting. Perhaps it was waiting out the fog, before it went about the business of flying around looking for handouts from picnickers.

Her last picture is the Old Mackinac Point lighthouse sitting on the shores of Lake Huron, surrounded in the fog, too. It used to be the beacon that would help the boats make their way through the Straits of Mackinac, but was deactivated years ago and now serves as a museum that tells the history of the area.

Lake eerie pix!

Have also crossed the Mac several times but never in fog, just a heavy rain once.

These are interesting shots, Cindy, thanks!

When I looked for Mary's overnight update to publish this morning's Pasty Cam, I smiled when I saw Cindy's pictures. Edie and I crossed the Bridge yesterday, on our way back from Petoskey to the Copper Country... and it was anything but foggy. In fact I remarked how crystal clear visibility was. You could see every little blade of grass out on Mackinac Island :o)

For those who know us, just a little update on Edie's progress. This year she marks 50 years as a type 1 diabetic, and we travel to Petoskey occasionally for visits with the team of doctors who have helped her cope with the related complications of this condition. This week's visit was a follow-up to foot and leg surgery she had there in January.

Recovery from surgery takes a long time for diabetics. In Edie's case - to speed up the process - they have prescribed hyperbaric oxygen treatments, which means we will basically need a place in Marquette on weekdays over the next month. We used to live there back in the 70's, but short term housing has changed quite a bit since then. We would welcome suggestions.

Since my husband was a diabetic, Charlie and Edie, I have an idea what you're contending with, so will keep in prayer ~ your health, your travels, and your need for a place to stay in Marquette! Hoping and praying that all goes well!:)

Good morning Charlie,

Do you think you would qualify to stay at Beacon House?

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, June 19, 2014 - 08:28 am:

God's speed to both of you, Charlie and Edie. You're lucky to have each other.
I have stayed at the Super 8 in Marquette Several times, it's not the Ritz, but it's fairly inexpensive.

Charlie & Edie, thinking about you both. Eddie has diabetes but you Charlie are dealing with it right along with her remaining true to your Wedding Vows. Sending my very Best to you. God Bless!

I apologize, Edie, sticky laptop keys. My profile picture is a picture taken back in 1958 of the Mackinac Bridge. To have one of those cars today!

Hope you guys find suitable housing. I'm sure with
all of the "friends" you guys have here on pasty,
and in your every day lives, you'll find it soon.
Prayers going out to Edie so she recovers from that
awful surgery!

Love these pictures of Big Mac. But then, I love
ANY pictures of it.

Have a great day!

Janie, we didn't have an Olds but had a '58 Buick. That year GM really put a lot of chrome on the sides of their cars. Needed a lot of polishing.:-/

Charlie...you've probably already investigated this.

when I use to stay in Marquette when my mom was in the hospital, I stayed at the hospital. that is what alex is talking about. when I was staying there it was only 10.00 a night. it was very nice. at the end of the hallway they had a room that had a kitchenete, couch and chairs with a t.v. an area to wash and dry clothes.it was also nice to be close to my mom, too.

forgot......thoughts and prayers to you and edie. with your love and support Charlie, how could she not do well.;O)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, June 19, 2014 - 11:20 am:

Nice pictures, Cindy. We have crossed the Big Mac a number of times in heavy fog like that. It is spooky looking. One might almost be expecting the Headless Horseman to go galloping by...

My thoughts and prayers are with you for a speedy and full recovery, Edie & Charlie! Most of the people that I know with Type 1 diabetes got it as children or teenagers. We know of two ladies who had difficult pregnancies with Type 1 diabetes, but fortunately, their babies were in pretty good condition when they were born.

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Thursday, June 19, 2014 - 01:38 pm:

Charlie, I'm glad that you and Edie enjoyed a crystal clear day going over the bridge. I have to say that there are worse things than fog, especially high winds. I've done that, and it scares me half to death . . . almost as much as the time my car broke down in the middle of the bridge on the grated lane. YIKES!
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Edie that things will go well, and she will be feeling better very soon. My husband is also a diabetic, and I know how serious that disease can be. Take care.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Friday, June 20, 2014 - 12:04 am:

Charlie, sending you and Edie my thoughts and prayers. I too am diabetic, type 2.

Charlie, my two cents.... If you can't get accommodations through MGH, I always stay at the Brentwood Motor Lodge by the Chevy dealer on 41. Very clean, good beds & showers, park in front of your room, close to everything you need. Talk to Jim there, 906-228-7494, tell him I recommended you. Explain the situation. I stay there when on business, and I know a lot of families who are visiting MGH stay there. He should provide you with a good rate.

Good luck and my sincere best to Ms. Edie.

Chuck Paulson

It was foggy in 2009 when I did my first Mackinac Bridge walk.

By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Friday, June 20, 2014 - 08:33 am:

My bridge! My bridge! How cool she looks in the fog! Yes, we are related. She opened in November 1957 and I came into the world in November 1957. We have shared birthdays ever since.

Charlie + Edie, I also send prayers for a good recovery. My mom is a Type II and got a foot infection from her first brace. With diabetes, there is no such thing as a speedy recovery, just a good recovery.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, June 20, 2014 - 10:03 am:

Our Scottish Terrier, Brimley, has had diabetes for 3 years now, he has 19 units of insulin injections twice daily. It is the human Type 1. People are surprised to learn that dogs can get diabetes. They experience the same health issues as people, he has to have blood curves done often. Brimley is and has been doing pretty good, he experiences skin infections/lesions often which takes time and patience to heal, and mild hair deterioration. A couple years ago he developed diabetes cataracts and went blind. Luckily he was a good candidate for surgery and had them removed and regained his eyesight back. As with people a good doctor is worth their weight in Gold, and I add his doctor is a Godsend, as on the 24th of this month Brimley will turn 12.

Last pic would be the perfect dvd cover for a movie about a haunted lighthouse!
