When Cindy Freeman was visiting the Soo Locks, she was able to see several freighters coming and going. In the second photo, the black boat is the Algoma Discovery and in the opposite lock is the Hon. James L. Oberstar. I’m not positive, but I think the third photo is also the Oberstar.

My favorites though, are the last two shots…the ship’s cook barbecuing a meal for the crew, perhaps a chicken dinner on the grill. I wonder if Cindy could smell what was cooking. And then the last photo of the two crew members who saw her taking photos and stopped to give her a smile!

Definitely an awesome place to visit! The Valley Camp is a must see museum ship to tour also!

Cindy what a group of photos. I absolutely love the
photo of the cook. Wondering if he is the Chief
Steward or the Chief Cook and how he got out of that
hot galley. Great photos Cindy.

Hi Everyone,

My first time posting here so thanks for letting me in.

Please keep in mind that the last Friday of June each year is Engineer's Day and the locks are open for public access beyond the locks park and viewing platforms.

You can cross the McArthur and Poe Lock gates to tour the Administration and Davis buildings.

Cloverland Hydroplant is open for tours and lots of other activities in town.

My favorite lunch stop is the VFW on Portage Street where they grill hotdogs and brats out on the sidewalk.

Stop and visit, Thanks,.

The sidewalks must get super hot in Portage..........Just wondering.....and kidding.

I LOVE the pic of the grilling ship cook, and the
dudes working - fascinating!
Never been to the locks, as it is not very dog
friendly in that area... (I guess I understand -
what if a dog freaked & fell into a lock - what a
mess trying to get it out!!) oh well - so many
other places to explore UP there!

I had so much fun at the locks this trip (May 14th). For a few weeks before, many freighters had been held around the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, which is not far from our home, because of ice jams in the St. Mary's River. A good consequence of that was that we were able to see so many ships at the locks. We saw several waiting both directions on the river, besides the two in the locks and one next in line. I think those men smiling and the one cooking were glad to see other people. It must be hard to be out on the lake for days. They were fun! It was so great also to be one of only six people in the observation deck. Thanks for sharing my photos, Mary. I have always been fascinated with the locks.

Wolterdr, I understand the problem of having a dog. Actually, I had my black lab with me when we visited the locks. He normally sits in the back seat of the car, but we drove two of our friends with us, so he had to travel in the back of my small suv. He was really jumpy when we got out of the car, and we didn't notice the sign that said "No Pets" because I was busy trying to calm him down. Well, I'll just say, after I had been there for about 15 minutes I was approached by a man in uniform from the Soo Locks Security who escorted me and my dog out of the park. He was just doing his job, and I went back to take more photos after the dog went into the car. My friends seemed to get a good laugh out of my situation, however!
