Kassy Kallio and her son were out at White City, near Jacobsville this past Saturday, when we had temperatures in the 80's and this is what they found there…ice floes still going strong. Kassy's little guy didn't mind them or the cold water at all, even climbing on an ice floe for a quick photo shoot. From the looks of the other photos, I'd say he was enjoying the chilling waters giving him some relief from the hot air!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it sure has been a strange winter/spring around here. I'm sure having floated on ice at the end of May, beginning of June, will be a memory that this little guy will keep stored away for many years to come. I know I won't soon forget it!

I remember swimming in the Big Lake in the summers as a kid. The running joke, every year, was my aunt asking me, "Did you see any ice floating out there? I'd laugh every time. Who knew it could actually happen? Love these pics!

That is a pretty adventurous young man in the photos. The clear ice in picture 3 is a neat looking piece of ice. Depending on your point of view this past winter was one to remember or one to forget.

Is there still ice in Baraga today? I've been following this year's ice-out as closely as I can via web cams and satellite imagery because I'm really curious to know when the very last sighting of ice of any kind in Lake Superior will happen. I noted yesterday that the MODIS satellite image appears to show some ice along the northwest shoreline of Point Abbaye, but the image resolution isn't that fine. Can you let us know when you see the last of the ice in the water anywhere?

This isn't the day for memorial remembrances, but I'd like to remember James Vencato today. As I recall, he landed at Normandy. He lived to become a successful businessman in Houghton. I was glad to know him and to shop at Jim's Food-Mart all the 16 years I lived in Houghton. He was one of the Greatest Generation. He was a good man and I think of him often, especially on D-Day. Thank you, Jim. God bless you.
