Today we have an ice report from a recent photo snapping session by Barb Bouwkamp:

"Ok, I was walking down the beach to check out the ice "shove" piles in Big Traverse and saw the ice still floating and a couple in a boat checking them out. It must be chilly out there next to the icebergs.

Then I took a closer look at the ice still on shore from the shoves and saw how this reminded me of some Finnish glassware I have. The Finnish designer, Tapio Wirkkala, who designed these pieces of glassware has said that the name of the glass pattern is Ultima Thule, which means in medieval geography, the name of a distant place that was beyond the borders of the known world or sometimes referred to as Scandinavia. Wirkkala adds that the pattern was inspired by the melting ice in Lapland and is a testament to winter's beauty and is eternal. It is evocative of an icy landscape of the furthest reaches, the Ultima Thule and has been one of the most popular lines of glassware produced by Iittala.

Anyway, I figured we all live in an Ultima Thule society up here in the Keweenaw as we are a little secret land, bound by the far reaches of icy Lake Superior and the frozen tundra which we inhabit. So I thought I'd share this with you all."
Barb ended her note by saying that we live in a mysterious place, where not too many dare to come, for fear they will come under the spell of the Keweenaw and Lake Superior and they will never want to go back where they came from. Sounds right to me.

I fell under the Keweenaws spell a couple of years ago...I
bought property and resigned as a varsity football coach , so I
could have my summers there! Incredible place. Can't wait to
live there PERMANENTLY!

Still a few reminders that winter is not 100% done yet.

Neat pictures Barb. Tapio did a good job on his crystal, looks remarkably like the ice.
Since 90 percent of an iceberg is under water there is still a lot of ice to be melted before it is all gone.

Thanks for the pics and the interesting story of the glass!

Hey all you Yoopers -- you are official now. The
Merriam-Webster dictionary added 15 new words
yesterday, and 'Yooper' is one of them!

I saw that Ert. That's awesome!

only thing about the word, yooper, is, they forgot the letter 'p' in how to pronounce it....yu er.

the iceburgs looks like clouds, floating clouds.

I saw the story in Upper Michigan Source. They are calling it a 'yooper blooper'.
