Last night as Edie and I were returning from Houghton, we headed up Quincy Hill as we usually do on the way to Eagle River. We both remarked at the same time how that you could barely see the old King Midas sign, and recalled when it was featured on the Pasty Cam back in 2002. As you can see, the owner has used the space for some more current advertising, which, I suppose, is their option (unless it's violating some outdoor advertising ordinance).
The link we originally referenced in the 2002 Shoebox Memory has also changed, so we've updated it at: Bald Mountain Childhood. You'll notice if you follow the link, the page to which we originally referred has since referred back to us.
Thanks also to Duke University Library for a pair of samples from elsewhere around the country, recalling the days when these ads were ubiquitous. As they've gradually disappeared like this, at least we have such repositories as a window in time.
It's fun to look at all of these old signs I remember seeing when I was younger. Thanks for taking me back, yet again!

Barn/building paintings are not a thing of the past in the South....most common one: "See Rock City, Atop Lookout Mountain.";)

Those were different days and different dreams. We advanced as a nation but I'm not convinced that we improved.
