George and Paulette Beveridge had the unique opportunity recently, of photographing five young kits peeking out of their den. One of them is somewhat hidden in these photos, but if you look closely on the left side of the den, you can see another fur coat in the background there. George and Paulette said there were Mom, Dad and the 5 kits there. What a great capture!
They also sent in a Pretty Bird update. I had recently heard that the tame Ruffed Grouse that visits them daily for snacks had come in one day not too long ago, looking like something had tried to catch him. So, I was glad to see and hear that Pretty Bird is doing just fine and they continue to feed him daily treats. In the top photo, George and Paulette were able to catch him "drumming". If you've ever been in the woods when one of these birds starts this ritual, you know what it sounds like. For those of you that haven't heard this "drumming" sound before, click here: Male Ruffed Grouse drumming. It sounds like someone trying to start up an engine!

Cool pics and sound bite! Reminds me of the helicopter starting up that takes me to work every day. :-)

Great pictures. When those guys start their "drumming", it scares the crap out of me, lol!
Love these pictures today and thanks for the update on Pretty Bird.

Pretty Bird had better look out for all those foxes (vixen?) in his neighborhood.

Sounds a little like a coin settling down on a counter top also.

Expected to see a long gray beard and a bald head on that bird. Just how old is he anyway?

Great critter pictures today. I've never seen a litter of five fox kits before. The average life span of a grouse is 6 or 7 years. I would say that Pretty Bird is far from your average grouse though.

THANK YOU for adding the link - I never heard a grouse drumming - it DOES sound like an engine starting - like my Dad's old "Putt-putt"! :)
