Before the heavy rain of the last couple of days, Brenda Leigh and her hubby, Jimmer Solko took to the shores of Lake Superior in the Brimley area to see if the melt had begun and this is what they found. Slowly, but surely, the Big Lake is thawing there, too.

Brenda snapped the first photo, with Jimmer standing on the edge of the icy mass and then Jimmer took his turn behind the camera as Brenda went closer to the slabs of ice to show the size of them. Not to worry, folks, she said the water is only about knee deep where she is standing and she tested the ice before she went out further. Brenda also said that the ice that is sticking up in that shove she's standing on, is about a foot thick. It's going to be awhile before that mass of ice is gone.

What an adventuresome pair!
Thanks, Brenda and Jimmer, for sharing your trek!

What Shirley said. You guys are definitely making
the most of your lives :-)

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Friday, May 9, 2014 - 08:36 am:

Oh Deb and Shirley, thank you both. Each day is a
gift and we live with the philosophy that our number
could be called at any minute. Life is so fragile.
NATURE TRULY IS A BLESSING TO US EACH AND EVERY DAY.

Otherworldly scene! I like Brenda's comment..."the water is ONLY about knee deep" :-)

Great pictures. Although I must say there are probably better times of the year to go beach combing:) The combination of sand and ice looks like it could be in a bowl with butterscotch topping on it.

Hi
Alex, if the water is only knee deep, you can, if you have to, walk to shore. Chilly & inconvenient but not life-threatening.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Friday, May 9, 2014 - 09:48 am:

Nice pics! Makes me want a sauna and a plunge in the big lake!

By Just me (Jaby) on Friday, May 9, 2014 - 09:51 am:

Great pics. The ice on Lake Superior is always
fascinating but was especially so this year!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, May 9, 2014 - 10:12 pm:

You're so right, Brenda :-)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, May 10, 2014 - 09:28 am:

Brenda, I echo what Deb said.:)
