Barb Bouwkamp set out on a mission a few days ago, driving around, looking for some interesting things to photograph and look what she found…living, breathing, signs of Spring here in the Keweenaw.
Yes, that's right…she captured a small flock of geese hanging out in Blueberry Alley out at Rice Lake. That's not the real name for the blueberry fields, but I thought it went well with the photo, so I took a bit of literary liberties with that one. Roaming around in that field, it looks like these geese have the best of both worlds, with some water on hand and maybe some leftover fruit or grasses to eat.
After her stop at Rice Lake, Barb decided to drive down the Post Road, which is about 5 miles outside of Lake Linden. That's where she spotted the Sandhill Crane, strutting around, pecking at the ground in search of some nourishment to fill its stomach. These birds always amaze me. They're so big that at first glance you might mistake them for a deer off in the distance, but then you spot those long spindly legs and neck and you know it's a Sandhill Crane. Of course if you hear it "talking", you'll know right away, since they have a very distinct call, sometimes described as prehistoric-sounding. Check it out: Sandhill crane

Is that bare ground I see or have these photos been touched-up? :-)

It's great to see that the snow is finally receding. Although Alex might be right. It could just be a late April Fools joke. :-) I've enjoyed watching the freighter traffic on Superior as well. That's been pretty awesome.

"The more fantastic an ideology or theology, the more fanatic its adherents." Ole Ed Abbey's words are so true, glancing around at today's newspapers and magazines!

Nice to see snow is melting! Sand Hill Cranes were here last year visiting us on our farm, but not this year.
