Earlier in the week, we saw photos of the Ice Shoves out at Big Traverse and now today, Bob Gilreath shares photos from a drive he took out that way, too. Bob's shots start at Big Traverse, with a look out at the ice on the Lake Superior and shows that there is still quite a bit out there and it is piled in small mountains. I sure hope the winds don't kick up again and begin pushing those hills onshore like earlier this week.
Then Bob headed towards Gay to check out the Tobacco River flowing into the Big Lake. It looks like quite a current rushing out to join Superior. After the river rush, the next stop was near Point Isabella on the way to Lac La Belle. Out there the Lake is opened up a bit more, but you can see all kinds of small ice bergs floating out there still. It looks like a flock of ducks out there with the ice, too or maybe they're geese, I can't tell for sure. Good thing they're covered with down feathers to keep them warm and dry.
The next stop was up on US 41 to check out what Central Creek was doing with the recent melting and snow/rain in the air. The water is running pretty swiftly there, too.
And last, but not least, Bob turned off US 41 to head back home via the Cliff Drive. I'm not sure how far down the road he was when he discovered that this section of highway isn't plowed for the winter and is still blocked by a good size snow drift right across the road.
Hard to believe it's already May 2nd and we still have roads that are blocked with snow banks. I wonder if we're just going to skip Spring here altogether and just charge into summer soon?

Nice shots...it has not been a stellar spring in SE-MI either, but the only ice problems I have are with cubes in the freezer.

That 'stuff' just doesn't want to go away, does it? We have no more snow/ice but LOTS of grass which is getting wild looking.
BTW, there's a wide-spot-in-the-road near my village which is called."Point Isabel". Must be a pretty popular name.

I hope all that ice bodes well for higher lake levels. That would be good for the big boats and their cargo.

Wonderful photos! The area is full of fantastic photo ops at this time of year!

I do not remember Cliff Drive being marked as a "seasonal road" by the Keweenaw Co. Road Department. It was not one in 1966 when I drove up it and snow shoed into Cliff Mine for winter pictures. Also in 2005 for winter carnival drive arounds to take pictures of the snow covered Keweenaw. Did they just give up this year?
Mary says: I kind of wondered the same thing, James W. Hird (Wvyooper). ;-)

I remember when we use to live there in the 70's and 80's it was only plowed if there was someone living along Cliff Drive and then only up to their house, not the whole road.

One time I asked my dad what was the latest he saw ice on Lake Superior. He said June. That was most likely in the 20s or 30s
