When there's snow on the ground and you're ready to hop in the car to find something to do that doesn't cost a fortune, head UP to Eagle River and feed the deer herd that is always willing to come out for some treats. That's what Liz Baumann did recently.

When I first looked at these shots, though, I was wondering how on earth they had bare grass in the Eagle River park, until I realized that was hay put out there for the deer, not bare ground. My favorite capture of Liz's is the third photo, with the deer sticking its head up high over the snowbank to see what's going on. It's pretty amazing that they're comfortable enough to carefully walk up to someone offering food right out of their hands. I guess they have that instinct that tells them they won't be harmed by these generous folks.

Silly me, at first i thought the hay was bare ground! Thanks for the cute pictures!

That picture from a few days ago of an E Neil Harri airplane is odd. No ID numbers on the plane anywhere visible. It looks like a Piper. It sure isn't the Cessna he flies otherwise. His Cessna has tricycle landing gear.

Yes, if you feed the deer asparagus now, then you don't have to prepare it as a side dish with your venison next fall. Very efficient!

Lot of deer.

There is a Residential Deer Feed Program set up and if you would like to help, you can send a check to the Superior National Bank in Mohawk MI 49950 or to 80 Mohawk St. Box 316 Mohawk MI 49950. Checks can be made out to KERF. It has been a very rough year for the deer and any donations would be appreciated.
