Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, March 23, 2014 - 12:16 pm:

Nestled among the shops of downtown Newberry is a unique landmark which provides today's Shoebox Memory. The Tahqua-Land Theatre, built during the Depression, is engaged in it's "Digital or Die" campaign now through April 18th, for all who would like to have a part in seeing this community establishment continue to serve. Follow the link to their website or click on the video above to find out more. Our thanks to Brad Uren for introducing us to the Tahqua-Land.

Have a good week :o)

Sure looks like it would be an interesting place to visit.

Progress is a good thing but it should be an optional thing rather than a progress or perish thing. I don't think it is a bad thing to be basking in the backwaters of time. I think the world would be better off if more places were.

A lot of talent in those murals in the recent pictures.

Cool video, cool dude! Adapt and survive.

Brad Uren!! Wow there's a blast from the past. I remember many a day exploring the mines of the Keweenaw together. Drop me an email sometime....

Thanks for providing the photos; next time we're in Newberry we'll have to stop by and have a look.

Thanks for letting us know about this, Charlie. I have been
saddened by the closings of many wonderful old movie theaters and
bookstores the last few years. I remember going to the theaters in
Ishpeming, Negaunee, Marquette and Houghton as a child.
Beautiful places, some thriving now in new ways, the others
languishing. I wish the folks in Newberry well, and will back them as
I am able.

I loved the video clip about the Tahqua Theater. When he mentioned about being the only theater for many miles, that totally reminded me of my childhood! Going to a movie was a huge treat back then because the nearest theaters were an hour away. To this day, it is still a big deal to me to go to a movie and be back home afterwards in only ten minutes!

The Regent Theater in Allegan has just gone through this digital change.

Old theaters are a treasure but hard to survive today.

What a stunning piece for us. A thousand thank yous for showing us. This job seems to be from his heart And I wish him and his supporters all the luck in the world!

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, March 24, 2014 - 12:26 pm:

I agree with Allen. Old theaters are a treasure. My daughter & I just went to an event at the La Paloma Theater in Encinitas CA, and that place is amazing - built in 1927-8, and is still original. A bit run down, but hasn't been changed a bit. That's what makes it such a treasure...an original fun place to go in a surf town. Makes me wonder if the owner of La Paloma will go digital some day. Most patrons love it just the way it is.
