These two photos of the Roger Blough, pulling into the CN Ore Dock in Escanaba were snapped by Rod Burdick, last Wednesday. He said that this is the Blough's first trip of the 2014 shipping season and that local fishermen in the Escanaba area were still reporting ice depths of over three feet near the dock.
Rod also reports that the Blough had departed Sturgeon Bay, WI, from its winter layup two days before arriving in Escanaba. The delay in getting there was due to the heavy ice on Green Bay. USCG ice breakers had to create a path in the ice from Lake Michigan to Escanaba.
Sailing on the Great Lakes is definitely a challenge this time of year and takes some hearty sailors to make it happen. The Soo Locks are scheduled to open up again for the shipping season on March 25, so hopefully the ice starts melting and moving around more, to make the passage of these big boats easier. Get ready all you Boat Nerds… they'll be sailing on Lake Superior soon! Pasty.NET will be there with live updates on our Marine Traffic Report

Oh Wow! What a nice surprise this morning ~ my favorite boat (ship) plying the Great Lakes! It is a very unique vessel. Thanks, Rod, and thank you, Mary, for posting it.

Nice...like a light at the end of the tunnel. I heard on the news this morning that the shipping lanes should be deeper this year due to the excessive freezing of the lakes, which leads to less evaporation and thus, the ships will be able to transport more goods.

These pictures of the Roger Blough remind me of the week in 2011 when I camped at Fort Wilkins. I saw many a freighter sailing the waters of Lake Superior. What wonderful memories those are...

There aren't a whole lot of nautical miles between Sturgeon Bay and Escanaba. My guess is around a hundred, so that was indeed some hard traveling.

Hi Lori: From Milwaukee to Escanaba is a longer trail and probably not so dusty. When I see "Engwife" that makes me pretty certain that you know where they were:)
