Local churches here in the Copper Country have had lots of youth activities through the years. One such program started in 1974 at First Baptist Church, the first local chapter of "Awana", to be followed by the Hancock Chapter...

...more to come on this story. It's mighty cold as I publish our Shoebox Memory just a little late this morning:

By the way, here is an article that notes where the name 'Awana' comes from ('74 Mining Gazette)

The Open House celebrating the Club's 40th Anniversary will be on Sunday, April 13th at First Baptist. Thanks to Brian Carlson for sending along the pictures. We recognize a lot of those faces, especially Pastor Hart and Joyce, who served there about 300 years (or so it seemed). I'll leave the rest of the identities up to those who may be able to point out themselves in the photos.

Have a good (warm) week :o)

All three of our kids were in Awana in the 90's; a wonderful program.

Thanks Charlie! I was an AWANA leader when i lived
in Muskegon. Great program and the kids loved it.

I grew up in Calumet and never knew there even was an Awana program so close by. I wasn't introduced to Awana until my daughter was invited by a friend while living in Sheboygan, WI. Then soon after my son started attending and then my husband and I became leaders. What a great program! May God Bless them all!

All four of my children spent time at AWANA. It was
and still is a wonderful program!
