Crossing the Mackinac Bridge is always an adventure, but making that drive at night is special with it all lit up and looming out of the dark, not to mention seeing the lights of Mackinaw City behind you and St. Ignace up ahead.

Bob Gilreath made that crossing on his way back home after following the Michigan Tech basketball team to Findlay, Ohio for the Gliac Championships. I'm guessing that arriving at the toll booths on the U.P. side of the Big Mac felt like they were almost home, even though in all reality, they had another 5 hours of driving before they reached home in Hubbell. When you think about it, Bob actually drove from the southern border of Michigan, to about 40 miles short of the northern border of Michigan on this trip, so he went from end to end just about. I wonder how many miles that is?

By Shawn Wyant (Sawyant) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 08:30 am:

589 miles from the Ohio/Michigan Border on US23 (Toledo) to Hubble.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 08:39 am:

Too many!;)

Neat shots, Bob.

Driving across the "BRIDGE" is an adventure. I
remember waiting for the ferry to cross the straits
feeding the gulls having a sandwich Then when you
got on, your parents would let you go up on the
deck. I can still remember seeing the "Bridge"
being built. I'am still in awe every time we drive
across the Mackinaw bridge.

By DEAN SCHWARTZ SR. (Lulu) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 09:08 am:

564.2 miles from my front door to my Aunt Shirley's
front door in Calumet. Not counting any tourist
traps on the way.

By dane l. christensen (Danech55) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 09:14 am:

Wow. Only 5 hours from the toll booths to Hubbell? That's smokin......lol.
Thought I held the record.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 09:47 am:

Crossing it in a snowstorm is quite the adventure.
We did that once, and they closed it a little while
after we got across. Omgosh! THAT was scary!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 10:08 am:

559 miles, 12 hr. 45 min. from our front door in Eastern Ia. to Copper Harbor. Pulling snowmobile/ATV on trailer, 559 miles, 14 hr. 25 min.

Five hours from The Bridge to Lake Linden/Hubbell sounds about right, especially if you have clear weather, good roads, and light traffic.

By Theresa Barnes (Flash) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 11:48 am:

1600 from our Colorado home to Hubbell. So far from home!,,,

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 01:57 pm:

Since everyone else listed their distances to Hubbell, thought I'd check with Rand/McNally and here's the mileage/time it came up with from my village in OH: 755.6 miles ~ 15hrs, 14mins.
Like I posted earlier...'too many'!

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 03:12 pm:

610 miles from my old home in Grosse Pointe to my new home in Copper Harbor: 299 to the bridge and 311 to CH. I once made it in 9 hours 45 minutes...but then, I was born with a lead foot...am hoping not to have to make that trip again.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 03:34 pm:

Sorry, but I believe Japei in Finland has us all beat on distance!! ;-)

By DEAN SCHWARTZ SR. (Lulu) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 07:24 pm:

Shirley, you have to visit the C.C. for the 4th of
July. there are so many places to visit, for one is
Chopp Park in Ahmeek. then to see the fire works in
Copper harbor or Lake Linden. Family FUN.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 09:12 pm:

I would love to, Dean, but afraid my long-way travelling days are in the past. A bit too crippled with arthritis. I've always loved the northern part of Michigan but never got farther on the U.P. than the Soo Locks. So I'll just continue to enjoy all the photos from UP there.:)

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 10:05 pm:

We crossed at noon today on our way from Murfreesboro, TN where
we were looking after a friend who had recently had a stoke. After
a stopover at my father's place in the LP we headed to the U.P.
Cold and snowy as expected, but how glad we are to be in
Ishpeming spending a few days here with family and friends.
Beautiful full moon tonight.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Saturday, March 15, 2014 - 11:08 pm:

My calender calls the full moon for tomorrow the WARM FULL MOON. Hope that means maybe it will warm up soon. We have 5°F here in Cornell. The water line 'tween the well and the house has been frozen now for about 5 weeks. Oh well, May is coming soon. :o) Pytavay, tomorrow is St. Urho's day for us Finns. Get your green and purple shirt out.

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Sunday, March 16, 2014 - 05:20 am:

Great photos indeed!! HAPPY ST. URHO'S DAY TO ALL.
Yes, green and purple will be my colors but look
out for the ALL GREEN day. TOP O DA MORNIN TO ALL
MY IRISH FRIENDS AND WANNABEES.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, March 16, 2014 - 08:33 am:

Speaking of bridge closings, I crossed the Mighty Mac in the late afternoon of November 10, 1975 in a blinding blizzard, and they closed it right after I reached the toll booth. I drove on to Munising in those extreme conditions, and learned the next morning that the Edmund Fitzgerald had been lost.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, March 16, 2014 - 09:39 am:

WOW Charlie! You'll never forget where YOU were
that day. Glad you made it safely across. I know
what that's like.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, March 16, 2014 - 03:40 pm:

Charlie, my dad and I were at the bridge the same day at the time they closed the bridge. One of my uncles had died and we were on our way to the funeral.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, March 16, 2014 - 05:24 pm:

Interesting blasts from your pasts, Charlie and Mikie. As Deb said, you'll never forget that day.
