Here UP North, we're at least hoping that spring will be coming soon, but we do know that just because the calendar says the first day of spring is March 20th, doesn't mean it really is since we're still dealing with snow piled in mountains. But it has to melt eventually, so we need to start thinking about spring. That means it's time to purchase your chicks and ducklings to get them started on their way to being chickens and ducks.

When Kathleen Niemi Vettori took her grandkids to the local Tractor Supply Store, they were drawn to the baby chicks and ducklings for sale there. Of course they wanted to hold one, but that's not allowed in the store, unless you're buying them. They sure are cute little things, all fuzzy and soft. Give them a few months and they'll be feathered out and on the way to laying eggs!

FOOTNOTE: Yesterday's shots from Carli Ongie, of her Grandparents climbing a mountain were pretty neat. If you missed them, just click here: Friday, March 7th, to take a look at them!

Ducklings and, baby chicks at the Farm Stores, and Peeps on the grocery store shelves, all signs of Spring!

Are those ducks trying to pick up some chicks?

These bring back memories ~ my mama raised chickens and we sisters always wanted to make pets out of the tiny chicks....we even picked out names for them. Mama also bought us a couple of ducklings for Easter one time ~ they were equally cute but messier than the chicks...especially after they grew up.:>
Thank you, Kathleen, for the sweet pix!

Back when I was grade school young we had chickens and some of those roosters were mean critters. I'm not sure of the type of chickens we had. Maybe Leghorns. Big white ones anyway. There was no such thing as a Cooper's Hawk, Sharpshinned Hawk or Redtail Hawk. Back in those days there were all "chickenhawks."

I so enjoyed the photos of the cute little chicks.
Spring MUST be coming soon!

Duane, we had a Rhode Island Red rooster that was so mean, Mama had to carry a broom to ward him off when she gathered eggs....he liked to use those spurs!:<

Hate to be a downer but I don't like baby chicks or duck sold for Easter, unless they are going to a farm. Most people have no idea how to care for them, and the newness fades after Easter. Same thing with puppies for Xmas.
I think there are other ways to honor our risen Lord.

Agreed...they aren't good for filling your Easter basket, as they are a commitment to take care of. These chicks and ducklings aren't being advertised as Easter gifts, though. They're out there for sale, because this is the time of year that you start raising your hens for laying or your bigger birds for consumption later.
