When Jeff Kalember and his family came to visit his oldest son at MTU, they did some family exploring, including a hike into the Hungarian Falls on snowshoes. It's a little bit of a walk in on the snowmobile trail and then you head up a different trail to find the falls. I've been to the falls myself, when there is no snow on the ground and it's tricky getting down the steep banks to explore the area at the base of the falls, but check out Jeff's second photo of the way down on snowshoes. Makes me wonder if part of the way down they acted like skis for a hair raising slide?
If you're thinking that a snowshoe trek into the Hungarian Falls sounds like a good time, but you're not sure about doing it on your own, you can join the Keweenaw Land Trust's Nathan Miller on Sunday, March 9th, at 2:00 p.m. to snowshoe hike the Hungarian Falls Nature Area and other destinations along the gorge in Hubbell. Everyone will meet at the northern end of the Golf Course Road where the plow line ends (on the Calumet side). For more information, email: nathan@keweenawlandtrust.org
Now, back to Jeff's photos…the last two were snapped on the Covered Road on the way to Freda. Although, as Jeff pointed out in his note to me, it's the (Un)Covered Road this time of year. Even without the leaves on the trees, it's still an impressive road to travel. The family decided to stop along the way and save the memory of this drive with a group shot of the "kids". Three of these "kids" made their debut on the Pasty Cam back on June 22, 2006, almost 8 years ago now. My how they've grown UP!
