This past weekend, the CopperDog 150 took place in the Keweenaw, starting in Calumet, passing through Lake Linden, heading to Copper Harbor and then back to Calumet's main street again for the finish line!
Melanie Hakala Rossi was on hand to snap some candid photos of the events. I really like the close-up shots she took of the musher and several of the dogs, all sporting frosted faces, so you can actually see how cold it was. From what I've heard though, the cold temps made the race much faster, due to the condition of the snow and trails. Melanie also said that she was told that the dogs really love racing and pulling the sleds. If you've ever been there at the beginning of the race and witnessed the wild anticipation in the dogs as they're waiting their turn to take off from the start line, you'll realize how true that is. Something else I found interesting is that mushers claim that the dogs work best at 0° Fahrenheit, so they were at their optimum for this weekend's race.
Melanie's last photo shows a different kind of sled with a human puller. That little one was bundled up quite well and colorfully, too. So well in fact, that it looked like she couldn't move if she wanted to. :->

Absolutely love the little one being pulled along!
Looks brutal, but certainly the race wouldn't have gone on if the dogs were at risk! Interesting they LIKE that temp!

The frosty mustache looks like a branch from our artificial flocked Christmas tree.
