Mike Dombeck, the U.S. Forest Service Chief, put forth a guideline and resolution in 1997:
"The health of the land must be our first priority. Failing this, nothing else really matters."
Quite a few Federal and State agencies voiced their approval, along with influential citizens in various other positions that could set our policy in this determination.
Alas, seventeen years has dimmed this noble idea. Harder economic times have opened the door for their greedy, opportunistic replacements. Extraction of resources, jobs, regardless of the cost to the land, conversion of all and any of the earth's riches to $$$$....Sad.
