In the midst of the winter months, most folks are either heading south to a warmer climate or at least dream of doing so. Not Paul Roberts though, he loves the Copper Country and especially the winters here, so much so, that he takes his vacation to head UP North to play in the snow.
Paul said he really enjoyed spending time right out there standing on the frozen Portage Lake Canal, even with the cold and wind. We've seen quite a few shots of the Lift Bridge, but not too many that I remember taken standing in the middle of the canal. Then Paul hung around long enough to get a few photos while the sun was setting. I couldn't choose which I liked best, so I included a darker and a lighter shot for you to decide yourself.
The next two photos were taken at Great Sand Bay. Sure looks cold and lonely there this time of year, with not another soul in sight. Can you spot the steps that take you down to the beach there behind where Paul is standing? Looks like they're pretty well snow covered, too.
That's Paul in the last photo, also. Snowblowing the sidewalk, was something he said he enjoyed doing while here for his visit. You can tell it was a cold day, since you can see his breath in the air. I'm betting that whoever he was snowblowing for in this shot, was wishing he was still here over the weekend to help with the snow removal after the big storm. :->

I am curious as to what make of snow blower is being used ?? I figure if it is good enough to use in the UP, it will work just fine for me down below.

R D, That was a Husqvarna snow blower. In fact it was brand new. :) I was actually clearing out an ice rink in the back yard. I highly recommend them Shirley, I've been trying to get UP there for several years! I'm just bummed I missed the blizzard! Such is life though. It was an awesome week! Oh and YES!!! It was FFRREEEZZINGGG!!! 30 mph winds off Superior. Yikes! It was AWESOME!

That's probably because you're a young fella, Paul ~ I may have enjoyed it 40 years ago.;) Sorry you missed their blizzard. Thanks for sharing the neat photos.

Hi I remember cross-country skiing on the frozen Taquahmenon river, looking up at the falls, on a trip to the UP sometime in the 70's. I think looking at the Great Lakes in a rare, largely frozen, condition, would also make for a great memory. In both cases, well worth going out in the cold for.

I could take a week or two of winter too. That's fun. But this one has been going on for 4 months already. I've never seen such a winter.

I love the fifth photo. Look at that smile!! Absolutely no one would smile like that unless they LOVED WINTER. What a grand season, best of all no biting bugs. Very beautiful photos Paul!
