This flock of turkeys looks to be posing for Melody Provost Holmes, at least in the first shot. But in the subsequent photos, they're definitely on the move. They're playing follow the leader in the third photo, probably on their way to the feeder Melody caught them at, snatching sunflower seeds for a mid-day snack.

Another name used to describe a group of turkeys, is rafter, but several sources claim that this term is used to describe a group of domesticated turkeys. Whereas, a group of wild turkeys would be considered a flock, although the terms are often used for both.

These birds were photographed in the Norway area, but in the past few years, we've been seeing more and more wild turkeys right here in the Keweenaw, too. They have to be a pretty hardy bird to survive the snow and cold around these parts, that's for sure.

Good morning! Have a great day!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 11:05 am:

Aww.....thanks Melody and Mary, I LOVE wild turkeys!:>
We used to see them around this area but haven't seen any in a long time.

They could also be called Thanksgiving dinner. :-)

I know turkeys are tall but how do they reach the bird feeder? Is the snow in the yard that deep? Oh Boy!

By Phil Kuusisto (Pkuusisto) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 11:25 am:

I always wondered what you call a group of turkeys. Now I know. A rafter. Thanks.

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 11:52 am:

Wow - Rafter, now that's a new one to me too.

Continual flock concentrations seen down around Florence, it was only am matter of time before the explored north.

Actually had a lone hen walk through the back yard here in Houghton last summer; as the French say "Cherchez la femme" or in this case when it's a hen, possibly " Cherchez la homme".

LOL! Mr. Bill.;)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 05:30 pm:

They sure do get around. We have a family around
our house out here, too! Nice pictures!

By dane l. christensen (Danech55) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 06:02 pm:

They are very tough, and I am not surprised that they are spreading throughout the U.P......as they have in the lower peninsula. They are survivors.

By Duane P. (Islandman43) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 07:15 pm:

Turkeys sure do look a lot better when viewed from a distance.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 08:54 pm:

Lot of gobblers here.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 10:04 pm:

You can have those turkeys, they make too much of a mess in the yard. I chase 'em away when they get too close.

By george piker (Asturgeon) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 11:19 pm:

wild turkeys can fly and if i'm not mistaken,
they roost in trees at night -- so getting
at a bird feeder should be easy.

By Just me (Jaby) on Saturday, February 15, 2014 - 11:54 pm:

Gobble Gobble! great pics! There must not be so many
coyotes or wolves around Norway.

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Sunday, February 16, 2014 - 10:14 am:

There is a "rafter" of turkeys that live on the East Side of Milwaukee. It's a heavily populated area but they have a route from yard to yard and was even photographed ambling down the street in the business district of Downer Ave. Quite comical.
