When Emma Stout and her family were on their way to Iron River for her brother's hockey tournament, the sun decided to peek out as they approached Baraga, lighting up all the fishing shanties out on Keweenaw Bay.

They stopped briefly, so that Emma could capture the fishing shacks and the smoke across the bay as it rose straight into the air, along with a couple zoomed in shots of the shanties themselves. It looks like there are a variety of designs for these shelters, some shaped like tepees, others just square and boxy. Not being an ice fisher myself, I'm not sure if there is any advantage to either design. I'm guessing all that matters is being out of the frigid cold and winds, which we've had more than our share of this winter.

Wonder how the catches have been this year?

There were no ice shanties on Keweenaw Bay when we were up at
Christmas. There's enough of them now that it looks like a small
village. Thanks, Emma.

There's so much ice on the lakes around here it's unreal. Of course, it's not as deep as Lake Superior is, either. Hope they're catching lots of fish!

Certainly the ice is thick enough.

N-ice pics! Reminds me of a recurring dream I have about tepees and wigwams. My shrink told me that I have to relax, I'm too tents. And remember, you can change a tire...but only if it wants to change :-)

Very good pics, Emma. Talk about catching a frozen dinner!

The little tepee style is cool. Also not as heavy or difficult to move as other cabin like ones I've seen. I have only seen these on Pasty.com

It's hard for me to see any beauty in these pix of ice because everything around my yard/area is covered with ice.....with broken tree limbs laying everywhere. And it's snowing even as I write.

Alex---If you look up "groaners" in the dictionary I believe you will find those same thoughts!! Get back to your taxes, you're not ready for stand-up yet. (but they were funny).
